The Government will β€œcertainly be developing” the concept of air bridges or β€œtravel corridors” in the hope of moving away from a blanket quarantine, Boris Johnson has said. The Prime Minister was quizzed about the new 14-day measures, which are due to start on June 8 and run until June 28 at the earliest. At the daily Downing Street press conference he said: “On the air corridors, I don’t want to go into the negotiations we are having but, clearly, we are discussing with our partners around the whole of Europe about what could be done.” He later referred to them as β€œtravel corridors” to countries with similar or lower infection rates, adding: β€œWe will certainly be developing that as we go forward.” Earlier today Priti Patel fended off criticism from several senior Conservative MPs as she set out the Government’s plans for a blanket approach to quarantine. She said: “It is really important for the British public and members to put this into perspective. “We are in a national health emergency right now. This isn’t about the inconvenience of certain regulations and measures – we are here to make sure we protect public health first and foremost.” But Tory backbenchers including former ministers Liam Fox and Theresa Villiers, and Sir Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 committee, questioned both the timing and the approach of the new measures. Governor Phil Murphy holds a coronavirus briefing in Trenton on June 2, 2020.
Matt Hancock chairs today’s Downing Street press conference after being warned by the country’s statistics watchdog that the Government’s testing figures for coronavirus are “still far from complete and comprehensible”. David Norgrove, chairman of the UK Statistics Authority, said the way the Government presented the figures appeared to be aimed at showing “the largest possible number of tests, even at the expense of understanding”. Elsewhere, Housing Minister Simon Clarke has said that it is going to be “very, very difficult” for people to take summer holidays this year, despite confirming that air bridges are still part of a “live” debate. He told BBC Breakfast that the two-week quarantine, which comes in from June 8, was “absolutely vital” and would last “for as long as is needed”. That has gone down badly with the bosses of Britain’s biggest travel and hospitality businesses, who have warned they will have to lay off up to 60 per cent of their staff if the quarantine goes ahead. Boris Johnson has confirmed that from Monday in England, groups ofΒ up to six people will be able to meet outside with others from different households as long as they “observe social distancing rules”. He added: “We will now allow people to meet in gardens and other private spaces.Β  These changes mean friends and family can start to meet their loved ones, perhaps, seeing both parents or grandparents at once.” Mr Johnson said that for many people, this will be a “long awaited, and joyful moment”.Β  He added that people shouldΒ try to avoid seeing people from too many households in quick succession “so that we can avoid the risk of quick transmission from lots of different families”. People should not go inside the homes of their friends and families, staying only in the garden. And those shieldingΒ  must continue to do so. “I want to say to those extremely clinically vulnerable people who are shielded that I do understand how difficult this has been for youΒ especially,” Mr Johnson said. Mr Johnson denied that the public will fail to heed the coronavirus advice because of the actions of Dominic Cummings. The Prime Minister told the Downing Street briefing: “No, I don’t think that people will respond differently, I think people will listen very carefully to what the messages are.” For all the latest politics news, head to our live blog: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/28/dominic-cummings-news-coronavirus-nhs-test-trace-boris-johnson/?WT.mc_id=tmg_youtube_offsite_televideo-youtubevideo_28MayBoris&utm_source=tmgoff&utm_medium=tmg_youtube&utm_content=offsite_televideo&utm_campaign=tmg_youtube_offsite_televideo-youtubevideo_28MayBoris Get the latest headlines: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/ Telegraph.co.uk and YouTube.com/TelegraphTV are websites of The Telegraph, the UK’s best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news [More]

The new NHS coronavirus test and trace programme will launch across England from tomorrow, the Government has announced. The programme is designed to let people know if they have been in close contact with someone who later reports positive for Covid-19 and could be a key to easing up social distancing measures. Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: “As we move to the next stage of our fight against coronavirus, we will be able to replace national lockdowns with individual isolation and, if necessary, local action where there are outbreaks. “NHS Test and Trace will be vital to stopping the spread of the virus. It is how we will be able to protect our friends and family from infection, and protect our NHS. “This new system will help us keep this virus under control while carefully and safely lifting the lockdown nationally.” From Thursday, anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions. People identified as having been in close contact with someone who has a positive test must stay at home for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, to stop unknowingly spreading the virus.
