If a vaccine is discovered for COVID-19, the reality is not everyone will get it at the same time. It could take months or years to produce enough doses for every person on the planet, that’s over 7 billion. There will be many dilemmas in the process including, who should get it first? Dawna Friesen also talks with epidemiologist Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, an international vaccine alliance that works to bring public and private sectors together to create equal access to vaccines. Berkley discusses how manufacturing a COVID-19 vaccine can’t come at the expense of producing other routine vaccines and the importance that access to a vaccine is done with a global perspective. President Trump said he is very confident there will be a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year during a Fox News virtual town hall at the Lincoln Memorial Sunday night. The whole world is waiting, held hostage by a virus so new to humans we have no immunity to it, and we don’t even fully understand it. What could free us is a vaccine. And though vaccine development cannot be rushed, speed is of the essence. It’s an international race, and Canada is in the running. Dawna Friesen speaks with Canadian epidemiologist Dr. Steven Jones who was a key figure in the creation of a vaccine for the Ebola virus. Jones talks about how surprised he is with the developments to date and how ambitious the timelines are to develop a vaccine. Jones says we need to face the possibility that it could be up to 4 years to develop a vaccine and it also may never happen For more info, please go to http://www.globalnews.ca/coronavirus Subscribe to Global News Channel HERE: http://bit.ly/20fcXDc Like Global News on Facebook HERE: http://bit.ly/255GMJQ Follow Global News on Twitter HERE: http://bit.ly/1Toz8mt Follow Global News on Instagram HERE: https://bit.ly/2QZaZIB #GlobalNews #Coronavirus #Vaccine

The coronavirus spreads easily and the majority of the world’s population is still vulnerable to it. A vaccine would provide some protection by training people’s immune systems to fight the virus so they should not become sick. But how easy is it to create a vaccine? And when could we expect one to be ready? BBC health correspondent Laura Foster looks at the situation. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog
The UK will likely keep in place social distancing measures until the government believes COVID-19 is under control. But what methods are the government implementing to fight the virus? The first is to fund several projects researching a vaccine for coronavirus. Both the University of Oxford and Imperial College London are running clinical trials to find a vaccine with government funds. Once a vaccine is found and distributed on mass, medical experts expect the COVID-19 pandemic to be over. The second strategy is to attempt to figure out how much of the population is infected or have previously been infected with the virus and therefore are immune to COVID-19. To do this a new study is being rolled out, testing over 20,000 English households to improve understanding of just how far the virus has spread. Volunteers will have to take regular swab tests to see if they currently have the virus and 1,000 of them will take blood tests, or anti-body tests, to see if they have previously had coronavirus. This will be key to giving the government enough data to see when lockdown measures can start to be relaxed.
