U.S. President Donald Trump and members of the U.S. coronavirus task force provided an update Monday on the administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump said some areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic appear “to have turned the corner” with death rates down “very, very substantially.” He predicted the country would have a “economic resurgence” as states prepared to reopen. Vice President Mike Pence touted the country’s capacity for testing for COVID-19 saying there is “enough testing capacity today for every state in America to go to phase one.” The president also said the U.S. is looking to top up its oil reserves with prices plummeting worldwide. U.S. President Donald Trump and members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force will hold a briefing outlining the country’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. On Thursday, Trump gave governors a road map for recovering from the economic pain of the coronavirus pandemic, laying out a “phased and deliberate approach” to restoring normal activity in places that have strong testing and are seeing a decrease in COVID-19 cases. The new guidelines are aimed at easing restrictions in areas with low transmission of the coronavirus, while holding the line in harder-hit locations. They make clear that the return to normalcy will be a far longer process than Trump initially envisioned, with federal officials warning that some social distancing measures may need to remain in place through the end of the year to prevent a new outbreak. American deaths from the coronavirus passed Italy’s, affirming the U.S.’s spot as the epicenter of the global pandemic. Deaths from the virus reached at least 19,563 in the U.S. after New York reported 783 new fatalities, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News and Johns Hopkins University. The heavy toll in the U.S. — and much of Europe — is linked to the failure to enact widespread measures like mass testing and social distancing early enough to prevent the virus from taking hold. Parts of the U.S. were still not locked down in recent days, creating the opportunity for wider spread in places that haven’t suffered as much as hot spots in New York and Detroit. U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. coronavirus task force provided an update on the COVID-19 crisis on Friday. Trump said that “tremendous progress is being made” and that there are signs the COVID-19 curve in the country is beginning to level due to “aggressive” strategies including physical distancing. Trump added that he thinks the death toll will be “substantially” less than 100,000, which was initially predicted as a potential outcome of the pandemic in the U.S. He also said that the medical supply for health care workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the country is “in great shape,” and that the Department of Defense will also be sending 10 million N95 masks. Over 2 million virus tests have been completed and approximately 100,000 more are being conducted every day, stated Trump. When asked about reopening the country amid the pandemic, Trump told reporters that “staying at home leads to death also,” and said that deciding to reopen the U.S. would be “the biggest decision I’ll ever make.” The number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has passed 470,000, with over 16,000 deaths in the country as of Friday.
