Queensland health authorities are trying to find out how Australia’s youngest coronavirus victim became infected in a town with no known cases. In this update: 0:11 – A fever clinic has opened in the central Queensland town of Blackwater after the death of Nathan Turner. He was found dead on Tuesday and later tested positive to the virus. Anyone experiencing covid-19 symptoms is being encouraged to be tested. 0:24 – The Melbourne meatworks at the centre of Victoria’s biggest outbreak is returning to full operations today. Cedar Meats has been linked to more than 110 cases but there have been no new infections in the past week. 0:38 – The number of deaths from coronavirus in the United States has surpassed 100,000. The number of confirmed cases there is almost at 1.7 million. 0:47 – The World Health Organisation has launched a foundation to raise money from “non-traditional sources.” That’s after US President Donald Trump threatened to permanently pull funding 0:57 – New South Wales ski fields will be able to open from June 22nd. Work is underway to ensure appropriate safety measures at Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Perisher. The epicentre of new cases and death tolls during this coronavirus pandemic has shifted over several months from China, to Europe and then to the USA. There’s always been concern about what could happen when the virus gets to less developed countries and the numbers are shooting up in places now like Latin America. Australia’s death toll stands at 100 and the number of cases here is relatively low with the big issue for the moment just how soon the internal borders here will open. In this update: 0:28 – The World Health Organization says the highest number of infections has been recorded globally in a day – 160,000. Russia now has the second highest number of confirmed cases, behind the United States, with the official count above 300,000. 0:47 – Brazil has experienced its deadliest day from coronavirus, recording 1,100 deaths in 24 hours. The country’s government is encouraging the use of anti-malarial drugs to treat the virus. 1:03 – The World Bank is warning up to 60 million people will be pushed into “extreme poverty” by the impact of covid-19. It says global economic growth is expected to shrink by 5 per cent this year. 1:13 – The NSW Premier says the opening of state borders across Australia is the sensible thing to do, and denies she is being a bully about the issue towards states which are being more cautious. The country reports over 15-hundred confirmed cases as of today… with a total of 13 deaths from the virus. For the latest on COVID-19 in South Korea… we connect to our Choi Jeong-yoon on the line. Jeong-yoon, hundreds more people were confirmed to have the virus. Yes, Jiyoon, South Korea confirmed 3-hundred 34 new cases on Thursday. This brings the total number in the country to one-thousand-five-hundred-95. Since the country’s first infection on January 20th, this is the highest number of infections in a single day. Most of the cases were in Daegu and the southeastern part of the country. 307 of the new cases are in Daegu and four each from the Gyeongsangbuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do provinces. South Korea’s central region also saw new cases. Six more in Seoul, three in Daejeon and four in Gyeonggi-do province. South Korea also reported its 13th death on Thursday. The 73-year old man from Daegu was one of the those related to the Shincheonji religious group. He was tested for the virus last Sunday and the results came back positive on Tuesday. He seemed to have no special symptoms other than fever and a cough… but started to have difficulty breathing on Thursday morning and died after CPR.
