Donald Trump has stepped up his anti-China rhetoric saying he was very disappointed over its failure to contain the novel coronavirus. It’s now thought the US-China trade deal could be under threat. As Washington and Beijing signed a Phase 1 trade deal in December, hailed by the Republican president as a major achievement, the COVID-19 outbreak broke out in Wuhan, China, and was spreading silently In an interview broadcast on Fox Business Network the US President said: “They should have never let this happen… I make a great trade deal and now I say this doesn’t feel the same to me. The ink was barely dry and the plague came over. And it doesn’t feel the same to me.” Under the Phase 1 deal signed in January, Beijing pledged to buy at least $200 billion in additional US goods and services over two years while Washington agreed to roll back tariffs in stages on Chinese goods. A Chinese state-run newspaper has reported that some government advisers in Beijing were urging fresh talks and possibly invalidating the agreement. Trump said again he was not interested in renegotiating. While US intelligence agencies said the virus did not appear to be manmade or genetically modified, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said early in May there is “a significant amount of evidence” the virus came from a laboratory in Wuhan. Displeased with pro-forma sessions, which he called a “scam,” U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to “adjourn” both the House and the Senate in order to fill vacancies which he said had stood empty for years but are now needed “more so than ever before because of the virus.” Trump later said he did not want to use the constitutional power that would allow him to adjourn congress, and declined to say by what date he planned to do so, saying only that “they’ve been warned.” The president made the comments during a daily briefing alongside members of the White House coronavirus task force. He also spoke about reopening the U.S. economy, alleging “there’s also death” in keeping businesses shut. Trump suggested that some states would be able to end lockdowns ahead of the May 1 deadline that Trump had previously set to revive the U.S. economy. He said he would speak to governors of several states on Thursday and would have an announcement on the topic following the meeting. A months-long lockdown starts to ease today in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus outbreak was first reported. The city’s drastic measures have served as a model for countries battling the coronavirus around the world. After 11 weeks, Chinese authorities are now allowing residents of Wuhan more freedom of movement. This milestone comes as China reported no new deaths on Tuesday. New York is still reporting sharply rising casualties from the coronavirus. The death toll has now climbed above four thousand, many more than died in the 9-11 attacks. The state reported its biggest one day jump in fatalities on Tuesday. Hospitals remain overstretched. But governor Andrew Cuomo insists the number of deaths is levelling off. He says this shows social distancing is working. Much of Europe remains under lockdown, the strategy many nations here are taking to curb the spread of the coronavirus. But there are exceptions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. senior Iranian official has threatened to seize a British oil tanker in retaliation for the United Kingdom’s boarding and seizure of the Iranian supertanker Grace 1 off the coast of Gibraltar over suspected sanctions violations yesterday. The incident comes as Iran says it will begin enriching uranium in violation a controversial international agreement that the United Kingdom, along with France and Germany, have been struggling to salvage after the U.S. government pulled out last year. It also follows a spate of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and as tensions between the United States and Iran have pushed those two countries worryingly close to open conflict. The Expediency Discernment Council serves as an advisory body to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and reportedly has powerful supervisory functions across the country’s government. Rezaei was also previously head of the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and may still be a member of that organization. The U.S. government has also blamed the IRGC for two separate sets of attacks on a total of six oil tankers between May and June 2019. The IRGC also took responsibility for shooting down a U.S. Navy drone in June, which almost prompted U.S. military action against Iran. Iran has already summoned the U.K. ambassador in Tehran to lodge a formal protest about the seizure of Grace 1, which Iranian authorities have branded as illegal and a “form of piracy.” British authorities have, not surprisingly, dismissed this characterization of the situation. British super tanker Pacific Voyager drifted in the Persian Gulf for six hours today prompting Iranian officials to announce that they had not boarded the 1,000ft vessel which was just outside its waters. The tanker was en-route between Singapore and Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia when it slowed to a halt this morning. UK officials said it had slowed to adjust its time of arrival in port.
