In this lesson I will explain a little about how the UK political system works, and introduce you to some of the vocabulary. You’ll …
Britain is adjusting to a new political landscape after a shock election victory for Prime Minister David Cameron that decapitated the opposition and bolstered secessionists in Scotland. Cameron’s Conservatives won 331 of the 650 seats in parliament, giving the prime minister a second term in office — this time with a majority for his centre-right party. VIDEOGRAPHIC
Dive into four different voting systems: plurality, instant runoff, tactical, and the Condorcet method, and find out which is fairest. — Imagine we want to build a new space port at one of four recently settled Martian bases, and are holding a vote to choose its location. Of the 100 colonists on Mars, 42 live on West Base, 26 on North Base, 15 on South Base, and 17 on East Base. Assuming that everyone wants the port to be closest to their home base, what is the fairest way to conduct the vote? Alex Gendler digs into voting systems. CNBC’s Meg Tirrell interviews White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci about his outlook for the coronavirus outbreak in the United States. The question of whether to reopen schools in the fall has a “complicated answer” and the decision will depend on the coronavirus’ transmission in certain regions of the U.S., White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Friday. “It has to be a bit of a — and I don’t mean lengthwise — a bit of a complicated answer, because the United States is a large country,” he said during an interview Friday on CNBC’s “Halftime Report.” “When you’re talking about getting back to a degree of normality and school openings and things like that, it’s always related to the level of activity of the virus,” he said. For instance, the level of virus transmission near cities such as Casper, Wyoming, will likely be much different from that of other metropolitan areas, he said, and the decision to reopen schools shouldn’t be a “uni-dimensional judgment.” “There are varying degrees of infection activity depending upon the region, the state, the city, the town and the county,” he said. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the number of cases has plateaued and is coming down as a nation overall. However, there are certain regions where there are blips in infections. “In general, things tend to be going in the right direction,” he said. “There are some areas that are doing better than others [More]

Boris Johnson has told MPs he is “confident” that the government will have a “world beating” system to test, track and trace people with coronavirus infection by June 1st. He was responding to criticism from Labour’s leader Sir Keir Starmer who said the lack of effective tracing of infected people had left a “huge hole in our defences”. The Labour leader compared the UK death toll to places with intensive test and tracing such as Germany and South Korea, where deaths are far lower. Meanwhile many hospitals, which were adapted to deal with the pandemic are now trying to get back to normal. But the head of Ipswich hospital is warning that the implications of social distancing – and the possibility that Covid-19 could be with us “for several years” – means that the NHS must find new ways of working. COVID-19 Update 55 with Roger Seheult, MD of https://www.MedCram.com Dr. Seheult illustrates new findings from Nature (a peer-reviewed journal) about how the SARS-CoV-2 virus may infect T-cells and render them ineffective during COVID 19 infection. A comparison is also made to how HIV infects T-cells with a key difference being that HIV actually utilizes T-cells of the human immune system to replicate itself (and this has not been observed with SARS-CoV-2. Other topics include a medical review by the Mayo Clinic about potential benefits of sauna/hydrothermal therapy (brief core temperature elevation), and a new “vent multiplexer” that allows some individual adjustment when treating multiple patients with one ventilator. The US’s railroad network is made up of around 140,000 miles of track, but many of our trains are slow and outdated. Over the last couple of decades, countries like China, Japan, the UK, and France have made large investments in high-speed rail, and some groups in the US are urging that we do the same. Here’s what a high-speed rail network could look like in the US. ————————————————– Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ ————————————————– Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US.
