My free Murray Lawn Tractor riding mower when started, sometimes the starter continues to spin because then energized plunger on the solenoid sticks in the energized position until you hit it with a screwdriver to disengage the plunger. To fix this issue, I just replaced the solenoid with a new one. There is an access cover under the dashboard of the tractor that you can remove and gain full access to the solenoid. The tractor had a 3 post solenoid which I had in stock and simply replaced it. Everything works as it should now. I also spent some time inserting inner tubes and fixing wheels with slow leaks from dry rot and cracks in the tires.
