The U.S. reached the grim milestone of 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus, the highest official toll in the world. Earlier this month, the president revised the death toll estimate to “hopefully under 100,000.” Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious-disease expert, said there’s a “good chance” a vaccine may be deployable by November or December. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidelines for reopening office buildings. Today’s government press conference was held by Environment Secretary George Eustice and Prof Angela McLean, chief scientific adviser to the Ministry of Defence. Here’s what they told us: Only a third of the fruit and vegetable pickers who usually come to the UK from Europe have come this year. The government wants Brits, especially those on furlough from their usual jobs, to take these jobs and has launched a new ‘Pick for Britain’ website for vacancies. There is now a steady decline in the number of daily deaths, as well as the numbers of people being admitted to hospitals and the numbers in intensive care. Scaling back contact tracing in March was the “right thing” to do with the level of testing available at the time, McLean. Early advice on testing was given based on capacity. The UK will try to emulate South Korea’s successful contact tracing system. Quebec Premier François Legault and provincial health officials provided an update on Tuesday about the province’s new COVID-19 cases and the government’s ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic. The premier announced that the province’s updated death toll now stands at 1,041, which includes an increase of 102 more deaths as total COVID-19 cases top 20,000 in the province. The majority of deaths — 850 — to date originated in the province’s long-term care homes, according to Legault. He said there were 80 such facilities where the spread of the virus is not under control. In addition, Legault said out of 2,000 health-care employees missing and needed during the pandemic, Quebec has recruited 1,000 more doctors, nurses, orderlies and medical students, adding that by April 22, the province should be able to fill the remaining 1,000 vacant positions. Legault said a meeting will be held later in the day regarding how the province will gradually reopen its economy, its schools and its daycare centres. He stressed the importance that the process must be gradual to avoid another wave of COVID-19.
