As soon as the texts started rolling in Monday evening, Chari Cuthbert knew she was on the cusp of the biggest moment of her career.”I was at my office, and I just sat there as my phone was going crazy, and I started to cry, ” Cuthbert told CNN of the moment it sank in that Michelle Obama was wearing her design — a gold necklace with the letters V-O-T-E — while giving her Democratic National Convention speech. The necklace is Cuthbert’s creation, part of her small, boutique jewelry line, based in Los Angeles, called BYCHARI. Since 2012, she has designed and produced custom pieces, with website orders coming mostly via word of mouth, social media and a handful of A-list influencers who support her mission. The business was already picking up steam and Cuthbert had increased her staff, from two to five and now eight. But a visual endorsement from a style icon like the former first lady has skyrocketed sales. Cuthbert said that about 12 hours after Obama’s speech on Monday night, orders for the VOTE necklace, which retails for approximately $300, were already hovering near 2, 000. She noted that each piece is custom-made, with production turnaround time typically about three to four weeks, but she made ”frantic” calls late last night to some of her suppliers in anticipation of the rush of orders, and she’s hoping she and her small team can start to turn necklaces as quickly as two weeks. On Tuesday morning a dedicated

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gave a briefing to media on the state’s ongoing COVID-19 crisis on Friday. Cuomo said that the state’s total COVID-19 hospitalizations are declining. However, how fast the curve for hospitalizations and cases will continue to decline depends on how citizens adhere to social distancing measures and how much testing for the virus could be conducted, Cuomo said. The governor added that by the time the U.S. instated a travel ban from China, the “horse had already left the barn,” meaning the novel coronavirus had already spread worldwide, and the virus in the state likely came from the strain in Europe after around 13,000 flights from Europe landed in New York and New Jersey. Cuomo said Republican Senator Mitch McConnell’s idea for states to declare bankruptcy rather than receive economic bailouts is not only unethical, but it sends a signal to international markets that the U.S. is in “real trouble.” The governor said if McConnell pushes for a bill allowing for states to do so, and it comes law, New York would not be partaking. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, along with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, and other provincial officials delivered an update on COVID-19 Wednesday and spoke about the ongoing work to protect public health. Alberta confirmed five COVID-19-related fatalities, bringing the province’s total number of deaths from the virus to 66 as of April 22. Kenney also said 70 Albertans are hospitalized with the virus, 18 of whom are in intensive care units. Hinshaw reported that the province had identified its first COVID-19 case on a First Nation. She said Alberta Health Services is working with Sucker Creek First Nation to follow up on the case, and that the individual is currently self-isolating. Hinshaw also reported an additional 306 cases, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the province to 3,401. Of these cases, 1,310 individuals have recovered. Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw gave an update on the most recent COVID-19 numbers in the province and on the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Thursday. The province reported 162 new cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing the provincial total to 2,158 as of April 16. “We did expect to see higher one-day case numbers as we expanded our testing,” Hinshaw said. Alberta’s chief medical officer of health said two more people died from the virus: a man in his 70s in the Calgary zone and a woman in her 80s in the North Zone. Both were residents of long-term care centres. Alberta has seen a total of 50 fatalities connected to the virus. Hinshaw also said 2,779 tests were completed over the last 24 hours. The novel coronavirus could cost 11,000 to 22,000 Canadian lives over the course of the pandemic — and that’s the best-case scenario with the strongest control measures in place to contain the spread of the virus. That’s according to modelling released by Canadian public health officials for the first time on Thursday, which lays out three different potential scenarios based on strong, medium and weak responses to containing the virus. It’s important to note projections are estimates based on the best available data so far, and that data can and does change regularly. But they offer a glimpse into where the data suggests the country could be heading, and the emerging picture is grim: 22,580 to 31,850 cases by April 16 with 500 to 700 potential deaths by the same time. Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided a provincial update on the COVID-19 situation in the province on Thursday. Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll rose by three on Thursday, reaching 32 total fatalities from the disease. Twenty-two of those were in the Calgary zone. The three latest deaths were a woman in her 80s in the Calgary zone, a man in his 70s in the Edmonton zone, and a woman in her 60s in the Calgary zone, the doctor said. One death was linked to a continuing care centre in Calgary, but Alberta’s top doctor said the individual was not a resident of McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre in Calgary, where over a dozen deaths had previously been recorded. So far, 151 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in staff and residents in continuing care facilities. Alberta Health said the province had 1,451 confirmed cases. In the last 24 hours, there have been 28 new cases in Alberta. On Wednesday, the province released its full projections modelled in three scenarios: probable, elevated and extreme. Modelling is done to allow the government to anticipate and prepare for the demands on the province’s health-care system. South Korea was an early coronavirus hot spot with over 75,000 cases and 54 deaths. But the country has seen a steady decline in new infections over the last few days due in part to mass testing.
