The province confirmed three new cases of the novel coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,043. To date, Nova Scotia has had 55 deaths. Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil and the province’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Robert Strang held a briefing Tuesday afternoon updating the latest COVID-19 numbers and detailing the province’s response to the pandemic. Strang reported 43 new cases of the virus, marking the biggest one-day spike the province has seen so far, and bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 517. He said 13 of the 43 new COVID-19 cases that were reported on Tuesday were from Northwood’s care facility in Halifax, where multiple staff and residents have tested positive. Strang said that all residents who have tested positive except for one individual were showing mild symptoms or were asymptomatic. The province has also increased their testing capacity, as the QEII Health Sciences Centre’s microbiology lab processed over 1,400 tests on Monday. As of April 14, Nova Scotia had over 16,500 negative test results. On Monday, Dr. Strang announced five new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in Nova Scotia to 127. He said one of the cases under investigation is now confirmed to be a case of community spread, as there were no direct links to travel or any previous cases. Seventeen new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Nova Scotia, bringing the province’s total to 90. In a press conference Friday, the province said “most” of the new cases are connected to travel or a known case. The 90 individuals affected range in age from under 10 to their mid-70s. Health officials say two are currently in hospital and three individuals have recovered and their cases of COVID-19 are considered resolved. Cases have been identified in all parts of the province. To date, Nova Scotia has 3,649 negative test results and 90 confirmed cases.
