Boris Johnson has restated his determination for a phased reopening of schools in England, before the summer holidays. They were closed on March 20th, to all except key worker’s children and vulnerable students. The Prime Minister said primary schools will reopen on June 1st, to early years pupils, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, though that may not be possible in all cases. From June 15th, Mr Johnson said secondary schools would provide “some contact” to year 10 and 12 students, to allow them to begin preparations for exams next year. This week the official number of deaths in care homes in England and Wales from Covid-19 is expected to pass 10,000. That number won’t include residents who died in hospital. Care leaders say two months into the pandemic, government support is still patchy and inconsistent. Ministers insist that they threw a “protective ring” around care homes from the start of the pandemic. However in the last week the BBC has spoken to more than a hundred residential and nursing homes, and nearly a third have still not been able to test any staff for the virus. Premier Doug Ford was joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, on Tuesday where it was announced that Ontario schools will not be reopening for the rest of the school year. The Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has said the government’s approach to re-opening schools in England will be cautious and based on scientific advice. But he warned that the longer schools are closed, the more children will miss out. The teaching unions have raised concerns over plans for some primary pupils to return to schools in England from the first of June. They say there is still too little testing and a danger that schools will help spread coronavirus infections. Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced on Sunday that all publicly-funded schools in the province will remain closed until at least May 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an extension of the previous order. The provincial government made the decision to extend the closures based on advice from Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, and the command table. Lecce indicated May 29 in the media briefing, as May 30 and 31 fall on a weekend. Lecce clarified that all private schools and daycare centres will also remain closed, but those are managed under the province’s emergency order. The education minister also said that Ontario is working on building a “strong” summer learning program and that all PA days, also known as professional activity days, for the remainder of the school year will be cancelled. The number of cases of coronavirus in the UK has jumped to 87, the largest increase in a single day in the outbreak so far. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) England’s Chief Medical Officer has warned that we are on the verge of moving from trying to contain the virus by tracking all known cases, to the ‘delay’ phase of the official response. That’s to stop the number of cases rising too quickly. Meanwhile Italy – the worst affected country in Europe – is to close all schools and universities until the middle of the month. ———————– Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/Channel4News
