Crowds of people have been seen in recent weeks at protests, over the Memorial Day holiday and, Redfield noted, at the SpaceX launch Saturday. Huge crowds gathered at Florida’s space coast Wednesday to watch SpaceX’s first attempt at launching astronauts to space. During the hearing, House Democrats grilled Redfield on President Donald Trump’s push for states to reopen after shutting down as part of social distancing measures meant to curb the spread of the virus. British Columbia’s Premier John Horgan spoke out on Wednesday against what he characterized as the “rise of racism” in the province amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. “Hate has no place in British Columbia,” he said, adding that it is “absolutely unacceptable” for people to take out their frustrations amid the ongoing health crisis on people of different races, religion, or sexual orientation. Horgan also said he was happy to see some individuals stand up against racist behaviour, and called on people to do so with “increasing regularity.” B.C. entered Phase 2 of the restart of the provincial economy on Tuesday, and Horgan said his government has been working with WorkSafeBC and public health officers to ensure people feel safe returning to work. The Business Secretary has outlined plans to develop a vaccine as coronavirus-related deaths have increased to 34,636 in the UK. In the daily coronavirus briefing, Alok Sharma said if trials of Oxford’s vaccine are successful, AstraZeneca will work to make 30 million doses available to the UK by September. He said another £93m will be put into the building of a vaccine centre – now scheduled to open in summer 2021 – which would be able to produce enough vaccines for the entire UK population within six months. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and the province’s chief medical officer Dr. Saqib Shahab announced the latest COVID-19 numbers on Friday and provided an update on the province’s response to the virus. The number of new coronavirus cases in Saskatchewan’s far north continues to rise, with 12 of the 13 new cases reported in the province on Friday located in La Loche and surrounding areas. An outbreak was declared in the La Loche area on April 17. The far north, which as 148 cases, accounts for nearly three-quarters of the 203 active cases in the province. One new case was reported in the north region, which has 38 active cases. The number of hospitalized people in the province jumped in the past 24 hours from 12 on Thursday to 19 on Friday. Meanwhile, six more people have recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 335.
