Manitoba’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Brent Roussin and Lanette Siragusa of Manitoba Shared Health provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 crisis and response on Friday. Roussin announced that there were no new cases of coronavirus in the province, for the third day in a row. Manitoba’s cases continue to stand at 289, with 28 active cases. Roussin said there were three individuals in hospital, with one in intensive care. Asked about how people should congregate during the long weekend, Roussin acknowledged there’s confusion. He said the more people you spend time with, the more you increase your risk — so people should still be cautious while enjoying an afternoon on a patio. On Thursday, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister said that additional enforcement is coming to public health orders in the province. New legislation has now been adopted and enacted under the Public Health Act which gives more powers to some officials allowing them to ticket people who are failing to comply with the orders. During the briefing, Russell said that there were still no new cases for a seventh day straight, a week after the province reported its last new case. Of the 120 cases in the province, two remain active. Russell also said she was happy to see people wearing a mask in public, but cautioned that it should not be used as a replacement for physical distancing. Alberta reported 45 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 1 new death, bringing the death toll in the province to 118. The province’s chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw said during a daily briefing about Alberta’s response to the pandemic that 4,866 people have recovered. There are currently 1,361 active cases. Hinshaw said 73 cases have resulted in hospitalization and 12 people are in intensive care. She also addressed questions about the province’s relaunch strategy, and said a decision about whether the province would push forward with Stage 1 of the relaunch on Thursday would be made during a meeting of the emergency management cabinet committee. A decision on that front would be announced on Wednesday. Hinshaw asked Albertans to “be patient” and said two triggers must be met in order for the province to move forward with the relaunch: first, the hospitalization rate must be stable or must not have increased by more than 5 per cent and second, ICU occupancy must be less than 50 per cent of available beds. South Korea has for the first time since February recorded no new cases of coronavirus from within the country. 4 new cases were recorded from people coming in from abroad, however, these people were tested and quarantined on arrival. South Korea is being touted as one of the most successful countries in being able to fight the COVID-19 outbreak, with its so-called curve of cases being an outlier compared to the rest of the world. Total confirmed cases in South Korea stand at 10,765. The nation has a population of 51 million people. In Europe by contrast, countries such as the UK and Italy, where cases total 165,000 and 203,000 respectively, have had far more cases of COVID-19 and deaths from the virus. So how did South Korea manage to fight the coronavirus pandemic, and even more extraordinarily without a full lockdown? The first advantage the country had was that it was prepared. After the MERs virus hit the world in 2015, which killed 36 people and infected 200, South Korea found itself unprepared. Learning the lessons from that virus outbreak, the country introduced new laws allowing the government quick access to a broad range of personal information to fight infectious diseases, and it started to build up stocks of equipment used to tackle viruses.
