Quebec Premier François Legault held a media briefing on Friday after his visit to one of the province’s COVID-19 hot spots, the city of Joliette. Legault announced that personal-care services can start re-opening in the Greater Montreal area as of June 15. The list of services range from hair and beauty salons, skin care, hair removal, barbers, hairdressers, nail salons and other services. Premier Legault said in his announcement that not everyone is lucky to have a wife with so many skills like his wife to cut his hair. The same personal care services in the announcement are set to re-open on June 1 in the rest of the province, among other services. This announcement comes as Quebec topped 50,000 COVID-19 cases and over 4,000 deaths on Friday. The prime minister has set out plans for shops and some other businesses to reopen in England. Outdoor markets and car showrooms will be able to open from June 1st if it’s safe to do so, with most shops following suit on June 15th. As the lockdown in England starts to be relaxed, more people will be using public transport and returning to work. With the changes come new challenges and potential risks of infection from coronavirus. Boris Johnson has restated his determination for a phased reopening of schools in England, before the summer holidays. They were closed on March 20th, to all except key worker’s children and vulnerable students. The Prime Minister said primary schools will reopen on June 1st, to early years pupils, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, though that may not be possible in all cases. From June 15th, Mr Johnson said secondary schools would provide “some contact” to year 10 and 12 students, to allow them to begin preparations for exams next year. This week the official number of deaths in care homes in England and Wales from Covid-19 is expected to pass 10,000. That number won’t include residents who died in hospital. Care leaders say two months into the pandemic, government support is still patchy and inconsistent. Ministers insist that they threw a âprotective ringâ around care homes from the start of the pandemic. However in the last week the BBC has spoken to more than a hundred residential and nursing homes, and nearly a third have still not been able to test any staff for the virus. As some states push to reopen, some parts of the pre-coronavirus lifestyle have returned to normal this weekend. However, there are instances where fewer restrictions came with a surge in virus illnesses. Jamie Yuccas reports.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and the province’s chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 ongoing response on Thursday. Moe announced an expansion of the testing criteria throughout the province as more businesses start to reopen, saying this will lead to an increase in overall testing numbers as a result. Shahab said the broadened criteria will pay careful attention to those who are caregivers to people with compromised immune systems, the homeless and vulnerable populations. Testing will also focus on patients restarting paused treatments like cancer care and expectant mothers. More businesses in Saskatchewan will be able to reopen on Friday under phase 1 of the province’s reopening plan, including golf courses and driving theatres. Outfitters operating in areas not impacted by current travel restrictions will be also permitted to begin their operations. Next Tuesday will be the beginning of phase 2 of the reopening plan, Moe said, adding that many retail businesses will be able to begin operation, such as shopping malls and select personal services including hair stylists and barbers, massage therapists and other services. Saskatchewan reported five new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, four in the far north and one in Regina. The total number of cases in the province stands at 582 as of Thursday.
