Manitoba recorded one new case of COVID-19 on Wednesday as the number of active cases in the province has fallen to below 10, according to health officials. The new reported case brings the total number in Manitoba to 298. Chief medical health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said Wednesday that four of the province’s active cases are linked to a cluster related to temporary foreign workers in the Southern Health region of the province. Manitoba health officials provided an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province and the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Friday. Dr. Brent Roussin, the province’s chief medical health officer, reported that no new cases of coronavirus have been found in Manitoba, keeping the case numbers at 294. Seven people have died, while 273 people have recovered. Shared Health’s Chief Nursing Officer Lanette Siragusa said due to the pandemic, wait times in hospitals are “historically low,” and that on average, people are waiting in hospital emergency rooms for only 38 minutes. The province will ease restrictions on Monday as Manitoba moves into Phase 2 of its reopening plan. Quebec Premier François Legault reported the lowest number of new cases of COVID-19 since April 11 on Tuesday, with 570 new infections. He also reported 51 new deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 3,647. The total number of COVID-19 cases in Quebec stands at 44,197 as of Tuesday. Quebec nurses held a demonstration outside of Legault’s office in Quebec City on Tuesday to draw attention to difficult working conditions during the pandemic. Legault said during Tuesday’s briefing that he was disappointed by the demonstration and he wants to meet with union representatives. He added that one of the fixes is to hire more workers, something he said his government has tried to do but positions are not being filled. Legault welcomed the recent agreement to extend the closure of the Canada-U.S. border for non-essential travel, saying it’s one of the requests he made when meeting with the prime minister in the past weeks. New York state recorded 731 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday, marking the biggest one-day jump in the outbreak. The state’s death toll since the beginning of the outbreak is now 5,489, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The governor said the number of deaths include those patients that were placed on ventilators “at the peak” of hospitalizations. “That’s why you’re seeing the number of deaths increase because these are people who came in at the peak. They were not successfully treated. They’re on a ventilator. The longer you’re on a ventilator, the less likely you come off the ventilator.” New York is projecting a “plateau” of hospitalizations, according to the governor. “You can see the growth (referring to a chart) and you see it’s starting to flatten. Again, this is a projection. It still depends on what we do and what we do will affect those numbers.” Cuomo said people must continue to observe social distancing to achieve the plateau and save lives. For most people, the virus causes mild to moderate symptoms such as fever and cough. But for some, especially older adults and the infirm, it can cause pneumonia or even death. New York governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that New York state has seen its highest single-day increase in deaths due to COVID-19 on Tuesday with 779 deaths recorded. Governor Cuomo said that the number of deaths is expected to “continue to rise as current hospitalized patients pass away due to COVID-19.” Cuomo also said that the state has lost more people to COVID-19 than it lost during the 9/11 World Trade Centre attacks. New York has a death toll of 6,268 due to the novel coronavirus while 9/11 caused 2,753 deaths among New Yorkers. On the other hand, Cuomo said that the social distancing measures have worked and that the COVID-19 curve in the state have started to flatten. Governor Cuomo added that he has directed Dr. Havidan Rodrigue, president of State University at New York (SUNY) Albany to do more COVID-19 testing among the African-American and Latino communities. Cuomo said that the state will give an additional $600 dollar to all unemployed New Yorkers and that the government is extending the period covered by unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks. Cuomo added that civic duty to vote shouldn’t be opposed to public health and that all New Yorkers will be able to vote absentee on June 23rd primaries.
