Dominic Raab said we can’t stay in lockdown forever as rules relax as the UK ‘transitions’ into stage 3, but he also warned lockdown will be tightened again if there is an “uptick” in coronavirus infection rates. The Foreign Secretary said the government will “target very carefully” measures to stop an increase in cases. He also said that he ‘didn’t know’ Dominic Cummings travelled to Durham on March the 30th, while Raab was acting Prime Minister as Boris Johnson was ill with coronavirus. He said: “I knew he was out of action suffering from coronavirus but I didn’t enquire into his whereabouts as I was focusing on the job at hand.” His warning came as Brits planned BBQs and garden parties while crowds flocked to beaches to celebrate Boris Johnson’s plans to ease the lockdown, earlier this week. Mr Raab told Sky’s Ridge on Sunday: “We will target, if there is any uptick, and it could be in a locality, it could be in a particular setting, we will target very carefully measures that would apply to it so that we can take these steps but also keep control of the virus.” Under plans to loosen the draconian measures enforced during the lockdown, non-essential shops wil reopen from June 15 as well as restaurants and pubs set to open next month. Schools are also set to go back tomorrow and Brits have been told that they can socialise in ‘social bubbles’ of up to 10 from six households. From Brexit [More]

Government officials hold a daily briefing to update on the coronavirus outbreak in the United Kingdom.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab hosts today’s Covid-19 briefing as government experts have been advised to lift the lockdown “very gradually” to avoid risking a rise in infection rate and losing public trust. A paper considered by the Government’s scientific advisory group Sage warns that having to reintroduce restrictions in a bid to control a second peak would be likely seen as “a serious failure of policy and trust in public health advice will be lost, leading to lower adherence to advice to restrict or to resume activity”. Speaking to the Health Committee today, Sir Patrick Vallance warned that the threat of a second peak was “very real”. He said: “I can tell you that a second peak is something that is very real, that you need to watch out for, and you can see it in other countries.” For all the latest coronavirus news, head here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/05/politics-latest-news-coronavirus-app-will-restore-liberty-claims/?WT.mc_id=tmg_youtube_offsite_televideo-youtubevideo_5MayRaab&utm_source=tmgoff&utm_medium=tmg_youtube&utm_content=offsite_televideo&utm_campaign=tmg_youtube_offsite_televideo-youtubevideo_5MayRaab Telegraph.co.uk and YouTube.com/TelegraphTV are websites of The Telegraph, the UK’s best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news and analysis on UK and world events, business, sport, lifestyle and culture.
