The Baker-Polito Administration today announced that Phase 2 of the Commonwealth’s reopening plan will begin on June 8th. Businesses and sectors set to begin opening in Phase II are subject to compliance with all mandatory safety standards. On May 18, the Administration released a four-phased plan to reopen the economy based on public health data, spending at least three weeks in each phase. Key public health data, such as new cases and hospitalizations, has been closely monitored and seen a significant decline allowing for Phase II to begin on June 8th. The public health dashboard designating the progress of key COVID-19 data metrics has been updated to reflect the number of COVID-19 patients in Massachusetts hospitals to green, indicating a positive trend. Since mid-April, the 7-day average for the positive COVID-19 test rate is down 82 percent, the 3-day average of hospitalized patients is down 55 percent, and the number of hospitals in surge is down 76 percent. Manitoba’s chief medical health officer Dr. Brent Roussin and Shared Health’s chief nursing officer Lanette Siragusa shared an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province and the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Monday. During the briefing, it was announced that there are no new cases of the novel coronavirus to report. Roussin said the province’s count of lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases remains at 295. The doctor gave more information on two cases reported late last week, which health officials have previously said were related to travel. Roussin now says both cases were truck drivers who had traveled into the United States. He said both truck drivers had self-isolated quickly after noticing symptoms. The province enters Phase 2 of its reopening plan on Monday, which will include expanded capacity at childcare centres, allowing limited access to educational facilities, as well as the reopening of community centres and resumption of team sports and recreational activities like theatre and dance. After much confusion about which businesses could move to the second phase of New York State’s reopening plan, some people arrived at Destiny USA Friday, May 29, 2020, ready to shop and were disappointed when turned away. Others who were there doing curbside pick-up said they’ll continue using that option, regardless. As it turns out, shopping malls will not be included in phase 2. Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and Premier Jason Kenney provided an update on Wednesday on the province’s ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19. Kenney announced that the province would be entering Phase 1 of their relaunch strategy starting Thursday. In all areas of the province, with the exception of Calgary and Brooks, retail businesses, hairstyling and barber shops, museums and art galleries, dental procedures, day camps and day cares will be allowed to reopen as of May 14 with limits on occupancies. Places of worship and funeral services would also be able to reopen under “strict guidelines.” Restaurants would be required to have seating at 50 per cent capacity. Calgary and Brooks, which Kenney said account for three-quarters of the province’s cases and hospitalizations, will see a more phased approach. On Thursday, retail businesses, museums and daycares will be able to reopen with limits on occupancies. On May 25, these regions will see hairstylists and barbershops reopen, as well as restaurants, cafes and bars with the same 50 per cent capacity as other parts of the province. Then on June 1, places for worship and funeral services will be able to have additional flexibility under COVID-19 measures. Hinshaw reported that as of Wednesday, there were 62 new cases. There were 5,076 recoveries, with 1,211 active cases. The province also declared a new outbreak during Wednesday’s briefing, with five people testing positive at the Horizon work camp, operated by Canadian Natural Resources.
