COVID-19 Update 80 with Roger Seheult, MD of https://www.medcram.com who discusses the recent retractions from well-established peer-reviewed journals The Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine. The retracted COVID 19 studies primarily focused on the efficacy and associated mortality of the medications hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, ace-inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers, and relied on data from a small company called Surgisphere. The Guardian first reported about and error in the Surgisphere data set which has served to undermine the validity of these studies for many including most of the authors of the studies themselves (This video was recorded June 5, 2020). ——————————————- Links referenced in this video: Johns Hopkins Tracker – https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html The Lancet (Original Article) – https://www.thelancet.com/action/showPdf?pii=S0140-6736%2820%2931180-6 The Guardian – https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/03/covid-19-surgisphere-who-world-health-organization-hydroxychloroquine Surgisphere – https://surgisphere.com/2020/05/29/response-to-widespread-reaction-to-recent-lancet-article-on-hydroxychloroquine/ The Lancet (Retraction) – https://marlin-prod.literatumonline.com/pb-assets/Lancet/pdfs/S0140673620313246.pdf STAT – https://www.statnews.com/2020/06/04/lancet-retracts-major-covid-19-paper-that-raised-safety-concerns-about-malaria-drugs/ The Scientist – https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/disputed-hydroxychloroquine-study-brings-scrutiny-to-surgisphere-67595 WSJ – https://www.wsj.com/articles/authors-retract-study-that-found-risks-of-using-antimalaria-drug-against-covid-19-11591299329 Bloomberg https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-06-05/the-tiny-data-firm-at-the-center-of-the-hydroxychloroquine-storm Science Magazine – https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/06/mysterious-company-s-coronavirus-papers-top-medical-journals-may-be-unraveling MedPageToday – https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/86861 ——————————————- Some previous videos from this series (visit MedCram.com for the full series): – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 79: COVID-19 Vaccines to Keep an Eye On – mRNA, Antigen, Others: https://youtu.be/-dYWZMx-Lfs – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 78: Mask Controversy; Vaccine Update for COVID-19 https://youtu.be/_IrYyhufDwI – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 77: Remdesivir Update; COVID-19 in Mexico https://youtu.be/LXtY_3A0WN8 – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 76: Antibody Testing False Positives in COVID-19 https://youtu.be/NSRK41UbTEU – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 75: COVID-19 Lung Autopsies – New Data https://youtu.be/PlUFibXtDxQ – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 74: Vitamin D & COVID 19; Academic Censorship https://youtu.be/-zK8LgVx2G8 – Coronavirus Pandemic Update 73: Relapse, Reinfections, & Re-Positives – The Likely Explanation

CNBC’s Meg Tirrell interviews White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci about his outlook for the coronavirus outbreak in the United States. The question of whether to reopen schools in the fall has a âcomplicated answerâ and the decision will depend on the coronavirusâ transmission in certain regions of the U.S., White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Friday. âIt has to be a bit of a â and I donât mean lengthwise â a bit of a complicated answer, because the United States is a large country,â he said during an interview Friday on CNBCâs âHalftime Report.â âWhen youâre talking about getting back to a degree of normality and school openings and things like that, itâs always related to the level of activity of the virus,â he said. For instance, the level of virus transmission near cities such as Casper, Wyoming, will likely be much different from that of other metropolitan areas, he said, and the decision to reopen schools shouldnât be a âuni-dimensional judgment.â âThere are varying degrees of infection activity depending upon the region, the state, the city, the town and the county,â he said. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the number of cases has plateaued and is coming down as a nation overall. However, there are certain regions where there are blips in infections. âIn general, things tend to be going in the right direction,â he said. âThere are some areas that are doing better than others

There is a big concern among health officials that the recent protests against police violence could prompt a spike in the number of cases in several weeks. Social distancing becomes difficult in tightly packed crowds, but there are other things you can do to reduce your risk and still show up to protest injustice. Jack Caravanos is a public health expert at New York University. He said make sure to protect your respiratory tract. “The key is of course to keep your mask on,” Caranavos said.
COVID-19 Update 78 with Roger Seheult, MD of https://www.medcram.com The CDC and WHO have conflicting recommendations on some aspects of the use of face coverings and masks, and Dr. Seheult reviews a NEJM article showing respiratory droplet spread with and without a mask.
