On Thursday, Ford said that while the number of cases in Ontario had remained at approximately the same level, he said it still appeared positive. Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Wednesday that his government is investing a $150 million in funding to improve broadband and cellular connectivity in Ontario. Ford said this money will go directly to expanding broadband and cellular access to more families and businesses in rural Ontario. Ford added that his government is partnering with municipalities, Indigenous communities and private sectors to deliver those critical projects. However, the premier called on the federal government for support and to “deliver on its commitment” to broadband accessibility, because “we can’t do it alone.” The new Improving Connectivity in Ontario, or ICON, program, when leveraged, has the potential to result in an investment of up to $500 million in total partner funding to improve connectivity in underserved and unserved areas. Ontario Premier Doug Ford held a briefing Monday alongside Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliot. Ontario reported 326 new cases of novel coronavirus Sunday morning, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 27,859. Nineteen new deaths were also announced, bringing the total fatalities attributed to the virus in the province to 2,266. Ontario reported 441 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 24,628 cases. The province also reported 28 new deaths, bringing the death toll to 2,021. Ontario will be moving forward with increased testing this weekend, including those who are asymptomatic. Those to be tested will include frontline health workers and other workplaces of concern. Dr. Williams said the utilization of testing capacity was one of the main reasons why the province will move ahead with the tests. Ontario reported 390 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the provincial total to 23,774. The death toll has risen to 1,962 as 43 more deaths were reported. According to health officials, 18,190 people have recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, which is 76 per cent of cases. Wednesday’s report marks an increase of 1.7 per cent in total cumulative cases. Wednesday’s new daily case number is lower than Tuesday’s report, which recorded 427 new cases. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, joined by Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Ross Romano, held a briefing on Thursday on the province’s ongoing COVID-19 measures. Ford said it was “frustrating” to see testing in Ontario lag behind other provinces, but said he’s asked his team to come up with a plan for random testing by next week, saying he wants to see testing expand into more industries including food processing, trucking and automotive professions. He added that he feels that the province needs to test more people, not just those experiencing symptoms. Romano and Ford also announced on Thursday that they were moving forward with 15 proposals for various Ontario-based projects related to COVID-19, including a rapid testing method in Hamilton which, when distributed, could enable 6,000 tests per lab a day, and a food security project in London. Further pressed on testing, Ford said that he wants teachers, daycare staff, early childhood educators and other adults in education tested before daycares and schools reopen. Asked if he also wants students and kids in daycare to be tested, he said no, but stressed he still wants “as many people tested as absolutely possible.” As of Thursday, the province saw 413 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total to 24,187. Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged residents to continue to follow physical distancing guidelines and to wear non-medical face masks when social distancing is not possible, a day after the province entered Phase 1 of its reopening plan. The premier was joined by Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney for a daily briefing Wednesday on the province’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, Mulroney said the province is recommending anyone travelling by public transportation to wear a face covering, except those who are under the age of two, has trouble breathing or is unable to remove a mask without assistance. She said health officials are also recommending that transit agencies put certain health measures in place, including adding physical markers between seats, making alcohol-based hand sanitizer available and putting plexiglass barriers in place. Premier Doug Ford was joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, on Tuesday where it was announced that Ontario schools will not be reopening for the rest of the school year. However, online learning will continue. “I’m just not going to risk it,” Ford said of not reopening schools. Premier Ford also announced that overnight camps will be closed this summer, but day camps will be allowed to reopen with strict public health measures in place in July and August. The update comes as the province starts the first stage of its economic reopening today, giving the green light to retailers, some sports centres, vehicle dealerships and other businesses to resume. Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe provided an update on COVID-19 on Friday. Dr. Yaffe reported a total of 21,922 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, an increase of 428 cases since Thursday, adding that “due to a data upload issue, 87 cases were missed on Thursday’s report, but now included in Friday’s report.” The actual number of cases on Thursday was 345, instead of the 258 that was previously reported. The actual new number of cases reported on Friday is 341, plus the 87 missed numbers to a total of 428. Dr. Barbara also reported an additional 27 deaths due to COVID-19 in Ontario, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 1,825. She also said that public health has “almost competed” the universal testing and surveillance for long-term care home residents and staff, which will open up more capacity to test more people at assessment centers across Ontario.
