Two police officers in Buffalo, New York, have been suspended without pay after they were caught on camera shoving a 75-year-old protester, causing him to fall and knock his head to the ground. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday the local district attorney should investigate the case for potential criminal charges. Barring that, the governor thinks the officers should be fired. Cuomo said he had spoken with the injured protester and said the graphic video of the encounter made him “sick to my stomach.” “It’s just fundamentally offensive and frightening,” Cuomo said. “Who are we? How did we get to this place.” The confrontation occurred shortly after the city’s 8 p.m. curfew on Thursday, NBC affiliate WGRZ reported. Journalists from Spectrum News Buffalo and WBFO were reporting in Niagara Square as they witnessed officers lining up to push back protesters who were out calling for police accountability and racial justice following the death of George Floyd. One of their videos shows the elderly man calmly approaching the officers, appearing to ask them a question, but the officers pushed the man back.

Quebec officials responded Wednesday to a military report which raised serious concerns as to how long-term care homes are being operated in the province. Premier François Legault said the 60-page report did “not have a lot of surprises” about the state of nursing homes, known as CHSLDs, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Legault said the long-term care home sector in the province has been unable to fill about 10,000 positions for years now. “The situation remains difficult,” he said, noting facilities desperately need more workers. The premier added they are introducing a program to recruit up to 10,000 workers to join long-term care homes and are offering a paid three-month training program. The report – which came after the military was sent into care homes in Quebec to assist — was released by the government on Wednesday and it outlines three major challenges: staffing shortages, management of personal protective equipment and how hot zones related to COVID-19 are handled. Quebec remains the epicentre of the virus’s outbreak in Canada. The province reported 89 additional deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total to 4,228. There are 541 new cases for a total of 49,139..
