Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe provided an update on COVID-19 on Friday. Dr. Yaffe reported a total of 21,922 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, an increase of 428 cases since Thursday, adding that “due to a data upload issue, 87 cases were missed on Thursday’s report, but now included in Friday’s report.” The actual number of cases on Thursday was 345, instead of the 258 that was previously reported. The actual new number of cases reported on Friday is 341, plus the 87 missed numbers to a total of 428. Dr. Barbara also reported an additional 27 deaths due to COVID-19 in Ontario, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 1,825. She also said that public health has “almost competed” the universal testing and surveillance for long-term care home residents and staff, which will open up more capacity to test more people at assessment centers across Ontario. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and the province’s chief medical officer Dr. Saqib Shahab announced the latest COVID-19 numbers on Friday and provided an update on the province’s response to the virus. The number of new coronavirus cases in Saskatchewan’s far north continues to rise, with 12 of the 13 new cases reported in the province on Friday located in La Loche and surrounding areas. An outbreak was declared in the La Loche area on April 17. The far north, which as 148 cases, accounts for nearly three-quarters of the 203 active cases in the province. One new case was reported in the north region, which has 38 active cases. The number of hospitalized people in the province jumped in the past 24 hours from 12 on Thursday to 19 on Friday. Meanwhile, six more people have recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 335. B.C. has recorded 11 COVID-19 deaths since Saturday, says B.C.’s provincial health officer. A visibly emotional Dr. Bonnie Henry said Monday the majority of those new deaths were linked to outbreaks in seniors’ care homes. The virus has now killed 69 British Columbians — more than half of them in seniors’ facilities. British Columbia confirmed 45 new cases Monday, bringing the provincial total to 1,490 lab-confirmed cases of the virus — about two thirds of whom have fully recovered. More than 250 of B.C.’s COVID-19 cases are linked to outbreaks in 20 Metro Vancouver seniors’ homes. South Korea’s rapidly expanding COVID-19 outbreak has claimed more lives and the number of new cases is jumping by the hundreds each day. For more details, we have our Kim Ji-yeon on the line for us. Jiyeon, the number of COVID-19 related deaths in South Korea tripled on Sunday….. Yeah, the total number of deaths due to the virus rose from two to six people in a single day. The third victim was a 41-year-old male who was found dead Friday in his residence in Gyeongju city… and was confirmed to have the coronavirus during an examination of his body. The fourth and sixth victims were patients at Daenam Hospital in the southeastern city of Cheongdo , where the country’s first coronavirus fatality took place… and it’s where at least 112 people have been infected. With this, the number of coronavirus-related deaths that were hospitalized patients from the Daenam hospital has risen to four. The fifth victim was a 57-year-old female… and is known to be a member of the Daegu -based religious group known as ‘Shincheonji’ . The number of newly confirmed patients increased by 169 in a single day on Sunday from the previous day… raising the total cases so far to 602. Among those is a 16-month old girl in Gimpo city … the youngest among the confirmed so far. She’s believed to have been infected by her parents, who were confirmed with the virus. [More]
