The Bank of England has warned that the UK is heading for an unprecedented recession. It says the economy is on course for the sharpest annual contraction for 300 years, with the coronavirus pandemic dramatically reducing jobs and incomes. The Governor of the Bank of England said the economy is expected to contract by 14%, twice as big a downturn as the great crash of 2008. Unemployment could double to 9% although the Bank of England is forecasting that the economy will bounce back next year. Meanwhile The Prime Minister will make a public statement on Sunday setting out the next stages of lockdown and any plans to ease it. But Boris Johnson has said his government will “advance with maximum caution”. In Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has made clear that she will not be pressured into acting too early to ease the lockdown, saying getting it right is “a matter of life and death”. Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Germany’s goal of slowing the spread of coronavirus has been achieved, so all shops can be reopened as lockdown restrictions are eased. Bundesliga football has been given the green light to resume and schools will gradually reopen in the summer term. Germany’s 16 federal states, under an agreement with the government, will take control of timing the reopening. They will operate an “emergency brake” if there is a new surge in infections. General contact rules involving will continue for another month. A limited resumption has already begun, but this easing of restrictions is far broader. It comes as the death toll in the US passes 70,000 and the UK now has the worst death toll in Europe. While we have to wait until Sunday to find out how our lockdown will be eased, the process is starting today in Italy – the first European country to bring in restrictions. Its sleeping economic life – and social life – for that matter have started to stir. And it is happening in other places too today. In Spain, small shops are able to reopen, including hairdressers – wouldn’t that be lovely – bookshops, florists and takeaways. In Portugal too small shops can open again and people are allowed to travel on public transport so long as they wear masks. In Croatia, today marked Phase Two in lifting their lockdown. They opened some beaches, as they did in Greece today, and also allowed hairdressers and beauticians to reopen. And, in Italy, four and a half million people were allowed back to work, in factories, building sites and in cafes ANI and restaurants doing takeaways.
