A Royal Navy ship reportedly aimed its guns at Iranian boats after they attempted to seize a British oil tanker.  HMS Montrose was escorting the British Heritage tanker through the Persian Gulf when the stand-off with five Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats took place on Wednesday, according to CNN.  It is claimed the boats told the tanker to change course and enter Iran’s territorial waters, with a US aircraft recording the incident.  HMS Montrose, which was trailing the tanker, then trained its guns on the Iranian vessels and warned them to back off.  The Iranian boats obeyed the frigate’s instructions, which were issued over the radio.  One US official told Reuters: “The Royal Navy HMS Montrose, which was also there, pointed its guns at the boats and warned them over radio, at which point they dispersed.”  Another official added: “It was harassment and an attempt to interfere with the passage.”  Britain’s Ministry of Defence had no immediate comment.  Thirty British commandos stormed an Iranian oil tanker bound for Syria last week, prompting Iran’s President to threaten the UK with retaliatory action.  Speaking on state television on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani said: “You (Britain) are the initiator of insecurity and you will realise the consequences later.  “Now you are so hopeless that, when one of your tankers wants to move in the region, you have to bring your frigates (to escort it) because you are scared. Then why do you commit such acts (seizure)? You should instead allow navigation to be [More]
Daily Star Online understands HMS Montrose – a Type 23 frigate – was on duty today as she guarded British shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It is believed she escorted oil tanker Pacific Voyager as she sailed through the piece of sea that separates the United Arab Emirates from Iran. The waterway has been the scene of attacks of tankers this year amid a renewed flaring of tensions in the Gulf. Britain has been roped into the feud as the Royal Marines stopped a tanker at Gibraltar which is believed to have transporting Iranian oil to Syria.  Iran reacted furiously and outright threatened to board British ships – warning UK officials to “be scared”.   Royal Navy warship HMS Montrose – who is stationed in Bahrain – was on alert in the Strait of Hormuz this morning as Pacific Voyager passed Iran. The tanker had to be checked on by UK officials over the weekend as she stopped close to Iranian waters – sparking fears she had been boarded. Weighing 4,900 tons, the HMS Montrose carries a Wildcat helicopter and is bristling with weapons. She has a 4.5inch gun on her bow and carries the powerful Sea Ceptor anti-air missiles.  In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said: “The UK maintains a long standing maritime presence in the Gulf. “We are continuously monitoring the security situation there and are committed to maintaining freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.”      Iran has been squaring up to the West as it reels over the scrapping of the so-called nuclear deal by the US, which [More]

It is the latest in a series of recent incidents in the area which have sent tensions between Iran and the US soaring. It also comes after the UK seizure last week of an Iranian oil tanker, the Grace 1, off the coast of Gibraltar, for which Tehran has threatened retaliation. Read More :https://bit.ly/2Lh1AgW
