Daredevil and Flat Earth theorist Michael “Mad Mike” Hughes died Saturday in a rocket crash. Hughes, 64, wanted to prove the Flat Earth theory by taking photographs of the Earth from a homemade rocket.  Saturday’s rocket launch was to be featured on the Science Channel, which was chronicling Hughes’ attempts to launch himself high enough in a homemade rocket to take pictures of the curvature — or lack thereof as far as Hughes was concerned — of the Earth. This particular launch was only supposed to take Hughes 5,000 feet in the air, according to Discovery. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes’ family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey,” Science Channel said in a statement. Although police did not positively identify Hughes, San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Public Information Officer  Cindy Bachman said Saturday in a statement, “A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event. Medical aid was staged for the launch and was on scene immediately.”  Hughes had previously completed a successful launch in March 2018, which sent him 1,800 feet in the air.  “The Flat Earth thing is like everything else to me,” Hughes told CBS News in October 2018. “I just want people to question everything. Question what your congressman is doing, your city council. Question what really happened during the Civil War. What happened during 9/11.”  At the time, [More]

“Mad” Mike Hughes Flat-Earther to Launch Steam Rocket Today 11th August 2019 Mad” Mike Hughes — a flat-Earther, rocket builder and daredevil who previously launched himself 1,875 feet (572 meters) into the air on a homemade rocket — will attempt to launch himself again to a much higher altitude this Sunday (Aug. 11). The attempt will be filmed by the Science Channel for the upcoming new series “Homemade Astronauts.” In March 2018, after a few failed attempts, Hughes successfully launched aboard his rocket and survived the trip, landing via parachute. The then-62-year-old Hughes walked away with some soreness and a compressed vertebra, he told Space.com. In the upcoming launch attempt, Hughes will aim for an even greater height: 5,000 feet (1,500 m). Hughes will lift off aboard a refurbished, improved version of the steam-powered rocket he launched last year. He told Space.com that he’s using steam to propel his rocket because it is both inexpensive and relatively simple. “There’s no fuel cost; it’s water,” he said. “Homemade Astronauts,” which is set to premiere in 2020, showcases civilians who endeavor to build and launch rockets and equipment for spaceflight. mojave desert, crash, conspiracy, homemade rocket, cat-news, world, disaster, flat earth, engineer, rocket, mad mike hughes, earth, inside_edition, ie offbeat, inside edition, science

On February 22, the 64-year-old crash-landed his steam-powered rocket shortly after take-off near Barstow, California. A video posted on Twitter shows the parachute, presumably deployed too early, trailing behind the rocket as it launches. Freelance journalist Justin Chapman, who witnessed the launch with his wife, said the rocket appeared to rub against the launch apparatus, which might have torn the parachutes attached to it. The sheriff’s office said: “a man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert.” Hughes’ publicist confirmed his death. Famous daredevil ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes has died after his self-made rocket crash landed, TMZ have confirmed.  Local reports say Mike propelled himself in ‘self-made steam-powered rocket’ which crashed into the ground.  Reporter Justin Chapman tweeted: “It is very likely he did not survive.”  TMZ later posted an update stated that he had died.  Shocking footage shows his rocket fly into the air at Bairstow in California. After it takes off you can see his parachute drift away, without anyone attached.  Mike’s former representative told TMZ: “When God made Mike he broke the mold. The man was the real deal and lived to push the edge.  “He wouldn’t have gone out any other way! RIP”  The daredevil amateur rocket-maker was reportedly filming for ‘Homemade Astronauts’,  a new series on the Science Channel that follows self-made teams on their quest to reach the sky, according to Space.com.  With the help of his partner Waldo Stakes, he was hoping to reach 5,000 feet (1.5 km) in the air while riding his steam-powered rocket.  The flat-Earther previously told the media that he’s using steam to propel his rocket because it is both inexpensive and relatively simple.  “There’s no fuel cost, it’s water,” he said.  Mike, from California, was a Guinness world record holder with a 103ft jump in a Lincoln Town Car stretch limo.  He built his first manned rocket on January 30, 2014, and flew 1,374 feet in just over a minute over Winkelman, Arizona.  We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, [More]
‘Mad’ Mike Hughes, the daredevil Flat Earth enthusiast who garnered worldwide headlines with his homemade rocket launch back in 2018, sadly passed away this weekend when an attempt at exceeding his previous feat turned tragic. The accident reportedly occurred on Saturday morning near the California city of Barstow when Hughes took to the sky in a steam-powered vessel of his own creation with the goal of reaching an altitude As a crowd of onlookers and a camera crew from the Science Channel watched in horror, the Hughes-piloted rocket soared into the air before quickly plummeting to the ground. At the start of the launch, which can be seen above in a video one of the parachutes designed to safely bring the vessel back down to Earth can be seen tearing away from the rocket. This likely set off a chain of events wherein the remaining three parachutes subsequently failed to deploy, leading to the daredevil’s demise.
