The ceremony began with Beyonce performing her songs “XO” and “Halo” with dozens of backup musicians. Alicia Keys performed Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” later in the program, and Christina Aguilera sang “Ave Maria.” The two-hour program concluded with “Dear Basketball,” Bryant’s Academy Award-winning short film. Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant were tragically killed in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. Seven other people perished in the accident alongside the pair. The tragedy devastated millions around the globe, but it’s the basketball star’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, who has arguably suffered the most, having lost a daughter and a husband all at once. Amid Vanessa’s pain, she managed to put together a memorial service for the father-daughter duo on February 24th, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The mom-of-four chose this date because 2 is Gigi’s basketball jersey number, 24 is Kobe’s, and 20 signifies how many years they were married. An unbelievable number of fans attended the “A Celebration of Life” ceremony, as well as fellow accomplished athletes and famous people who love the Bryant family. And given the circumstances, one can imagine how emotional this event was for anyone who attended or watched the live stream online. BeyoncĂ© surprised fans at Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s memorial service when she opened with her 2013 single, “XO.” Before kicking off the rendition, the singer told the audience: “I’m here because I love Kobe and this was one of his favorite songs.” The singer then transitioned into an emotional version of “Halo,” a performance she put on in front of a choir all dressed in white. The Staples Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers, was a much more somber venue on February 24th, 2020 when the arena was used to honor one of the team’s very own legends. A memorial was held for Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant to celebrate their lives that were taken all too soon. Kobe and Gigi died in a tragic helicopter crash, along with seven others, on January 26th in Calabasas while en route to a youth basketball tournament. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife and the mother to his four children, including 13-year-old Gigi, took the stage to deliver an emotional speech about the “most amazing husband” and their daughter’s “sweet grace,” as well as her athletic abilities. Vanessa wasn’t the only one to get in front of the crowd. BeyoncĂ© performed “XO,” which she mentioned was one of Kobe’s favorite songs. Shaquille O’Neal drew big laughs with his sweet tribute, while Michael Jordan gave a somber speech that will likely move you to tears yourself. Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan shared more than just the basketball court: They had a close bond as people, no matter how competitive they got. At the memorial, Jordan spoke to their strong connection. “Kobe was my dear friend. He was like a little brother. All of us have little brothers, little sisters who for whatever reason always tend to get in your stuff…It was a nuisance, if I can say that word. But that nuisance turned into love over a period [More]
