Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the Bank Holiday weekend will be a “test of the nation’s resolve” as he issued another warning to the public to “stay at home” and curb the spread of the virus. The warning comes a day after the UK recorded its highest daily death toll among Covid-19 hospital patients, with the total nearly at 9,000. Meanwhile, a total of 19 NHS employees have died from suspected coronavirus since the Covid-19 outbreak began, Mr Hancock said. The new 4,000-bed temporary facility at the ExCel convention centre is due to open this week despite building work only starting last Wednesday. Split into more than 80 wards containing 42 beds each, the Nightingale will become one of the biggest hospitals in the world, according to its chief operating officer Natalie Forrest. And Ms Forrest said a “scary” number of staff would be needed to run the facility at full capacity and appealed for volunteers to come forward.
