The Government is rejecting calls to relax the coronavirus lockdown, saying the outbreak remains at a “delicate and dangerous” stage. Ministers are asking people to adjust to what they’re calling “a new normal,” for some time yet. As the Prime Minister Boris Johnson returns to work, the government says the current restrictions are having a positive effect, with fewer people being treated in hospital. There remains concern among care providers about testing for staff and residents in care homes in England. The BBC has spoken to more than 200 providers, and three quarters say none of their staff has been screened. President Trump called protesters demanding an end to the lockdown “responsible peopleโ – hours after encouraging demonstrations in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia. Trump had earlier called for the โliberationโ of the Democrat-run states in a series of incendiary tweets. The president admitted Thursday it was up to governors to reopen their states amid the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming 29 were close to ending their lockdowns. Asked about the protesters Friday, Trump said: “These are people expressing their views. They seem to be very responsible people […] theyโve been treated a little bit rough.” Hours before his conference, Trump tweeted “LIBERATE MINNESOTA.” He then added, “LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” in a second tweet. In a third tweet, he said: “LIBERATE VIRGINIA.” All three states are run by Democratic administrations and all three are likely swing states in Novemberโs election. B.C. health officials say measures put in place to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus are working, but restrictions wonโt be lifted until the middle of May at the earliest. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says officials are looking at a re-opening of the health-care system in May as a first step, but a huge number of barriers still need to be cleared. โFor the health-care system to start ramping up again โ outpatient visits, surgeries, diagnosis test increases โฆ these things need to happen in tandem. But we need to do it in a way that does not increase risk of people coming together, spreading the virus and transmitting it,โ Henry said. The province released another set of complex modelling data on Friday that suggests B.C. is flattening the curve when it comes to confirmed COVID-19 cases and is well ahead of the Canadian average.
