Montreal’s regional director of health Dre. Mylène Drouin provided the daily update on the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednseday. Dr. Drouin announced a total of 2090 cases of COVID-19 in Montreal, with 132 hospitalizations and 26 cases in intensive care. She said that public health expects more cases to be announced in the coming days as they were dealing with a backlog in the labs in the past few days. Montreal’s mayor Valérie Plante announced earlier on Wednesday that the city’s parks could close to the public if people gather there during the novel coronavirus health crisis. Quebec’s premier François Legault said that Montreal police officers are able to hand out fines to people gathering in parks if necessary. The measure gives police officers more powers, including giving fines to people who are not respecting self-isolating rules when they were ordered to do so. There are more than 4,600 cases of COVID-19 in Quebec as of Tuesday, with nearly half of them in Montreal. Ontario Premier Doug Ford will be joined by Deputy Premier and minister of health Christine Elliott, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance, to make an announcement on COVID-19 response in the province. On Tuesday, Ford announced that publicly-funded schools would remain closed until at least May 1 for teachers and May 4 for students. Private schools and child care centre closures have also been extended for two weeks, with Education Minister Stephen Lecce explaining the shorter closure for these institutions is because they fall under the province’s emergency order, extended to mid-April, as opposed to the Education Act. Lecce also laid out the next stage of learning for students at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, which would reconnect students with teachers, and give access to online tools and report cards for students and educators. He said they also are working to provide more assistance for students with special needs as well as more mental health support. Ontario Colleges and Universities Minister Ross Romano said on Tuesday that in addition to a six-month deferral for student loans through OSAP, the government would also be providing universities, colleges and Indigenous institutes with $25 million to use how they see fit as they deal with the difficulties resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
