You may have learned to be a people pleaser or a doormat, or that you had to be someone other than yourself to get love and to fit into the family unit. While this is what you had to do to survive, it kept you from developing the most important relationship you will ever have, and that is the relationship with yourself. In getting to know yourself, you discover your strengths, gifts and talents. As we develop self-love and self-esteem, we learn to appreciate the aspects of our personalities that make us unique. When we grow up in a dysfunctional home, those parts of our personality are often seen as being negative. You may have followed a certain career path because it was expected of you, because it would be acceptable to your family or culture, or because it gave you the particular lifestyle you wanted, even if you don’t particularly enjoy the work. I encourage you to consider what you do naturally and easily, what you could do for hours without noticing that time flies by.
