Late Night is a 2019 American comedy-drama film directed by Nisha Ganatra from a screenplay by Mindy Kaling. It stars Emma Thompson, Kaling, Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Denis O’Hare, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan. The plot follows the host of a late-night talk show who teams up with one of her new staff writers in an attempt to save the show. In August 2017 Ganatra replaced Feig and the film was picked up by FilmNation Entertainment. Much of the cast joined in April 2018 and filming began later that month in New York City. Following its premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2019, Amazon Studios bought the domestic distribution rights for a record $13 million. Late Night was theatrically released in the United States on June 7, 2019. In the upcoming Amazon Studios comedy Late Night, Emma Thompson plays a first-ever, longest-running female host of a late night talk show, Katherine Newbury. After years of success, with ratings sagging, she was put on notice by the network that she may lose her show. Taking a harsh look at her career (and her writers room) Katherine decides to hire a woman writer who can help her reshape the show. Molly Patel, a chemical plant worker played by Mindy Kaling (who also wrote the film) gets impulsively hired as the first female writer on the show. The film follows two women’s self-discovery journey in the television business dominated by men. The HFPA’s Barbara Gasser and Barbara De Oliveira Pinto talked to Kaling and Thompson in London. It’s a comedy writers’ room, but plenty of drama ensues. In “Late Night,” Emma Thompson plays the talk-show host Katherine Newbury, who is pondering how to save her program from sinking ratings. A newcomer to the writing staff (Mindy Kaling, also the movie’s screenwriter) has ideas about the show, but they are welcomed with less than open arms. In her narration, the director Nisha Ganatra discusses how she put Thompson and Kaling on opposite sides of the table to signify that the two women are “really on the same journey,” if at different points in their career. She also talks about techniques that add visual variety to a scene that mostly consists of characters talking around a table. Late Night: Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson Interview I absolutely loved Late Night. Loaded with great performances, a super funny script, and a story that deals with a tremendous amount of current day issues (white privilege, misogyny, diversity) without ever feeling preachy, it’s the kind of movie that I hope breaks out and is seen by millions of people. If you aren’t familiar with the film, Late Night premiered to great reviews at the Sundance Film Festival and was immediately bought by Amazon Studios. Written by Mindy Kaling and directed by Nisha Ganatra, the film stars Emma Thompson as a veteran late night talk-show host that hasn’t kept up with the changing television landscape. When the new head of the network (Amy Ryan) threatens to take her show away due to declining ratings, Thompson decides to make some changes and brings in her first female staff writer (Mindy Kaling). While Thompson’s character is hesitant to change her ways, she eventually warms to Kaling’s character and realizes she’s going to have to fight to stay relevant and on the air. Late Night also stars John Lithgow, Ike Barinholtz, Hugh Dancy, and Denis O’Hare. When I sat down with Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling at the press day for the film, they talked about how the film tackles so many things going on today without it ever being preachy, the challenges of filming the movie in twenty-five days, what they learned from early screenings, and shared a great story about their first [More]
Emma Thompson & Mindy Kaling are interviewed for their movie Late Night which is written by Kaling specifically for Emma Thompson to play. Emma Thompson stars as Katherine Newbury, a pioneer and legendary host on the talk-show circuit, while Kaling stars as Molly, the hot young writer new to the all-male writing room just bristling with ideas. To celebrate the release of Late Night – written by the comedic talent that is Mindy Kaling, and starring the luminary Emma Thompson, we had the pleasure to sit down with the two women to talk about the comedy that has been much talked about ever since its Sundance premiere earlier this year. Kaling – who also takes a starring role in the film – discusses whether she had any freedom crafting the character Thompson portrays; of a late night talk show host, given how few women feature in this very profession. Thompson tells us why she felt so compelled to play the role, and they also touch upon establishing the film’s tricky tone; to remain comedic throughout and yet be so profoundly pertinent, exploring a variety of relevant topics. The film feels very much of a product of the MeToo and TimesUp movements, and so we asked the two if they have felt any shift from within the industry, in the wake of this essential spotlight. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Denis O’Hare, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan co-star. Plot: A late-night talk-show host suspects that she [More]
