Boris Johnson has told MPs he is “confident” that the government will have a “world beating” system to test, track and trace people with coronavirus infection by June 1st. He was responding to criticism from Labour’s leader Sir Keir Starmer who said the lack of effective tracing of infected people had left a “huge hole in our defences”. The Labour leader compared the UK death toll to places with intensive test and tracing such as Germany and South Korea, where deaths are far lower. Meanwhile many hospitals, which were adapted to deal with the pandemic are now trying to get back to normal. But the head of Ipswich hospital is warning that the implications of social distancing – and the possibility that Covid-19 could be with us “for several years” – means that the NHS must find new ways of working. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had a heated Prime Minister’s Questions with Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer, as the opposition leader probed him on coronavirus testing in care homes. Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Johnson said that the expanded team of call centre workers and tracers would be ready by June 1 and would able to handle 10,000 new Covid-19 cases a day. he announcement came after Sir Keir Starmer claimed that the decision to abandon the original contact tracing scheme nearly 10 weeks ago had left a “huge hole in our defences”. Hitting back, Mr Johnson accused Sir Keir of “feigned ignorance” and said he had previously made clear that the UK had been forced to change course due to a lack of testing capacity. During the fiery exchange, Health Secretary Matt Hancock was also reprimanded by Sir Lindsay Hoyle for heckling Sir Keir, with the Speaker warning that he was “more than happy” for him to be leave the chamber. There may be light at the end of the tunnel today for London as new modelling suggests the capital’s coronavirus outbreak is slowing dramatically. The research by Public Health England and Cambridge University suggests the reproduction rate of the virus, the ‘r’ is now at 0.4 in the capital. Meaning for every ten people who catch coronavirus, it will be passed on to just four others. The research estimates that new daily infections in the capital are now at just 24 Before the lockdown, London’s r rate was around 2.8, with 213,000 people being infected a day by March 23rd, when the lockdown was imposed. The modelling suggests that London’s infection rate is halving every 3.5 days in an encouraging boost for Britain’s biggest city and economic powerhouse. After London, the South West has the second lowest rate of infection with 739 daily recorded cases. In different parts of the country, however, the picture painted is much bleaker. Boris Johnson will reveal more detail on his plans to reopen society in England, after unveiling the “first sketch” of his “road map” out of the coronavirus lockdown. The prime minister will answer questions from MPs and the public on Monday while No 10 will publish its 50-page official guidance in Parliament. Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer criticised the PM’s plan for lacking clarity. It comes as Scotland and Wales rejected No 10’s new “stay alert” slogan. In Sunday’s televised address to the nation, Mr Johnson announced a “conditional plan” to reopen society, allowing people in England to spend more time outdoors from Wednesday. The PM also said people who could not work from home – including those in the manufacturing and construction industries – should return to the workplace from Monday but avoid public transport. Mr Johnson said the government would “modify” lockdown measures over three “careful” steps through to July. A new Covid Alert System with five levels would influence how quickly the lockdown – which was

BORIS JOHNSON GIVES COVID-19 UPDATE: Prime Minister Boris Johnson speaks from Downing Street to address the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. Johnson is expected to reveal a ‘roadmap’ for how to ‘unlock the various parts of the UK economy,’ as the nation has been under a lockdown order for seven weeks. Though hesitant to ease any major social distancing guidelines, Johnson is hoping to find a way to restart some of the economy, let people travel for work, and have students return to school safely. Part of this plan would require people to wear facemasks in public to give people ‘confidence that they can go back to work.’ There are 220,500 coronavirus cases throughout the UK and almost 32,00 people have died— more than any other country in Europe. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/KnowThis #UnitedKingdom #Coronavirus #BorisJohnson #News #NowThis #NowThisNews Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news. U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled new coronavirus lockdown rules in England, including a controversial “stay alert” slogan. His approach is on par with other European countries, like Italy or Spain. Elizabeth Palmer reports.
The prime minister has outlined measures to start a gradual easing of the lockdown in England, while warning of the danger of a second surge of the pandemic. In a television address Boris Johnson said it was the right time to “update” the government’s message in England, from “stay at home” to “stay alert”. But Labour warned that the new message lacked clarity. And the “stay at home” message is not being changed in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister’s plan urges anyone who can’t work from home to return to work, but to avoid using public transport if possible. People will be told they can exercise as much as they want but playing sports can only be done with members of the same household. From June schools in England could see a partial reopening starting at primary level. There are no plans for a full return of secondary schools before September. From July at the earliest, parts of the hospitality industry and other public places might be re-opened. There may be some kind of quarantine for all air travellers arriving in the UK although there is no detail yet. United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson has addressed the nation, providing new guidance on dealing with the coronavirus lockdown. The UK has recorded nearly 32,000 deaths, the most in Europe and the second-highest pandemic toll worldwide. Ahead of the prime minister’s speech, the government was accused of confusing the public with a new “stay alert” message, which replaces the earlier “stay at home” slogan. Boris Johnson revealed that lockdown measures could change on Monday – as he faced up against Labour boss Sir Keir Starmer at PMQs for the first time. The PM will address the nation on Sunday with a roadmap for how to tweak the current lockdown measures, some of which may come into effect the very next day. The PM will lay out how he hopes to get Britain back to work and school once again, giving hope to millions of people that they could see restrictions lifted. And he admitted today that some tweaks may come into effect on Monday, though no huge plans are on the cards. Addressing MPs and the nation this lunchtime, he confirmed he would give a speech on Sunday. MPs had questioned why he is not going straight to the Commons to tell them first. The British prime minister said his doctors were preparing if things went “badly wrong.”
Boris Johnson says he can confirm “for the first time we are past the peak of this disease and on the downward slope”. The PM says the UK will beat the disease by “growing resolve and ingenuity”, including by working on a vaccine. He promises that next week the government will release a “comprehensive plan… on how we can get the economy moving, how we can get children back to school and how we can travel to work and make life in the workplace safer”. He says the plan will be based on “how we can continue to suppress disease and at same time restart the economy”. Johnson says it will be “guided by science” and he will attempt to “build maximum political consensus”. He adds: “We have come through the peak. We have come under what could have been vast huge Alpine tunnel and now we see the sunlight in the pasture ahead of us. “It is vital we do not now lose control and run into second and bigger mountain.” Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog
