Coronavirus latest -The UK coronavirus death toll today rose to 16,509 after 449 more fatalities were recorded in the lowest increase for a fortnight. The last time the daily death toll was that low was two weeks ago on April 6 when 439 fatalities were reported. More than 140,000 firms have applied for the government’s COVID-19 furlough scheme on the first day – and it will pay the wages of one million people in days. The Chancellor said that since the scheme opened up at 8am this morning, it had been inundated with requests for state grants. The scheme allows employers to claim up to 80 per cent of a furloughed employee’s wages, capped at £2,500 a month. In all, 5,000 HMRC staff will man phones and webchat services to answer questions so money is available as soon as possible. And it will pay them within six days, he said today, just in time for the April payday. New York governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that New York state has seen its highest single-day increase in deaths due to COVID-19 on Tuesday with 779 deaths recorded. Governor Cuomo said that the number of deaths is expected to “continue to rise as current hospitalized patients pass away due to COVID-19.” Cuomo also said that the state has lost more people to COVID-19 than it lost during the 9/11 World Trade Centre attacks. New York has a death toll of 6,268 due to the novel coronavirus while 9/11 caused 2,753 deaths among New Yorkers. On the other hand, Cuomo said that the social distancing measures have worked and that the COVID-19 curve in the state have started to flatten. Governor Cuomo added that he has directed Dr. Havidan Rodrigue, president of State University at New York (SUNY) Albany to do more COVID-19 testing among the African-American and Latino communities. Cuomo said that the state will give an additional $600 dollar to all unemployed New Yorkers and that the government is extending the period covered by unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks. Cuomo added that civic duty to vote shouldn’t be opposed to public health and that all New Yorkers will be able to vote absentee on June 23rd primaries. British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 29 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the province’s total to 1,203 cases. This is the lowest increase B.C. has seen in weeks, but Henry said she’s not claiming victory yet. “I don’t think I’m ready to say anything is a ‘win’ yet, but every day that we have been bending that curve is a good thing,” Henry said. Three more people have died from the novel coronavirus in B.C., raising the death toll to 35. Henry said outbreaks have been identified at 23 long-term care facilities across the province. The majority of the province’s deaths from COVID-19 have been linked to at least two seniors’ homes.
