Government borrowing has surged to its highest level on record, underlining the scale of the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The deficit, the difference between government spending and tax receipts, soared to more than £62 billion in April, due to the level of financial support provided by the Treasury, to help businesses and employees through the crisis. The hole in the government finances wasn’t helped by a big drop in retail sales. They plummeted by a record amount in April, as many high street stores closed in the coronavirus lockdown. Clothing sales were hit hardest, down more than 50 per cent, although online spending online rose. The company which owns the coach firm Shearings has gone into administration. The Specialist Leisure Group, which is based in Wigan and employs more than 2,500 people also runs the brands UK Breakaways, Caledonian Travel and Country Living Hotels. The Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has said the government’s approach to re-opening schools in England will be cautious and based on scientific advice. But he warned that the longer schools are closed, the more children will miss out. The teaching unions have raised concerns over plans for some primary pupils to return to schools in England from the first of June. They say there is still too little testing and a danger that schools will help spread coronavirus infections. A top US government virologist turned whistleblower has accused the Trump administration of failing to tell the truth. Dr Rick Bright said Americans were ‘not as prepared as they could have been’ in tackling coronavirus. Dr Bright once ran the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, the government agency overseeing vaccine efforts. The Trump administration abruptly removed him from the position last month. During three hours of giving evidence on Capitol Hill, the government scientist said the US lacks a ‘master plan’ and gave a stark warning to members of Congress. The number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 18,601 on Tuesday while the death toll has surged to 590, according to the latest data by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Of the total number of cases 3,251 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals. Coronavirus case tally has 3,000-mark in Mumbai as 155 more test positive, while the death toll has surged to 138 after addition of 7 fatalities, according to the civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. On a positive note, the doubling rate of COVID-19 has slowed from 3.4 days to 7.5. But, out of 100 cases, 80 per cent cases are asymptomatic.
