All 57 members of Buffalo’s Emergency Response Team RESIGN in ‘disgust’ over the suspension and criminal probe of two cops for shoving a peace activist, 75, to the floor during protests Fifty seven officers have resigned from their positions on a Buffalo Police squad in support of two colleagues who were suspended after they were filmed shoving a 75-year-old peace activist to the ground, causing him to crack open his head. The two officers were suspended without pay and are now under criminal investigation after footage showed them knocking Martin Gugino to the ground and leaving him with critical injuries in front of Buffalo’s City Hall in upstate New York on Thursday night prior to the city’s 8pm curfew. The Buffalo Police Benevolent Association told the Investigative Post that all members of the department’s Emergency Response Team have since resigned. ‘Fifty-seven resigned in disgust because of the treatment of two of their members, who were simply executing orders,’ PBA president John Evans said. The 57 officers have not resigned from the Buffalo Police Department – only the Emergency Response Team they were serving on. It comes after Erie County District Attorney’s Office revealed it was investigating the officers for potential criminal liability. ‘The Erie County District Attorney’s Office continues to investigate the incident captured on video outside City Hall Thursday evening that resulted in the injury of (a) protester,’ a spokeswoman for the office said in a statement on Friday. Gugino, a longtime peace activist from Amherst, is in a [More]

Evans says the members resigned to support the two suspended officers, and in disgust of how the administration is handling the entire incident. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz learned about the group action during a press conference Friday afternoon.”I’m very disappointed if they resigned. B.C. Premier John Horgan announced Wednesday the renewal of a provincial state of emergency as the province continues its efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. Horgan said the state of emergency would remain in place “for the foreseeable future.” The B.C. government also announced it would use a funding windfall of $120 million from the federal government to “decommission, reclaim or restore” more than 2,000 inactive or orphaned wells within British Columbia. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an investment of $1.7 billion to clean up orphan wells in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan in April to help keep people working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Energy Minister Bruce Ralston said $100 million would be used to clean up dormant wells in B.C., while $15 million would go towards cleaning up orphaned wells, where the operator “no longer exists,” cannot be located or is insolvent. The remaining $5 million will be used to mitigate the environmental impacts of “legacy” oil and gas discovery. Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday his government would deploy extra resources to long-term care homes battling serious COVID-19 outbreaks, as provincial legislators met to extend a state of emergency declaration for another 28 days. Ford said he wanted “specialized teams” deployed to these facilities and added that his administration would issue an emergency order declaring that employees of long-term care homes will not be able to work in multiple facilities. Ford also said Tuesday that schools would not reopen on May 4th, marking the second time the Ontario government has pushed back the date for schools reopening. Ford said Education Minister Stephen Lecce would be providing more details in the coming days. Ontario reported 483 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 7,953. Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister provided an update on Monday in regards to the COVID-19 response across the province. Provincial health officials spoke shortly after the premier with an update on the province’s COVID-19 cases and measures being taken to curb the pandemic. Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin announced one new case of COVID-19 in the province on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 204. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths remains at two, he added. Also, Roussin said that in addition to practicing social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, people are encouraged to wear non-medical face masks to protect others from catching the virus through droplet spread, echoing the advice of Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam. He stressed that wearing the mask does not protect the individual wearing it from catching the virus, rather, it could help prevent further spread of the virus. Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister said that as Canadian provinces begin to run out of money and enter further debt situations due to spending to counter the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government should create a “federal emergency reserve.” Pallister said that he and the other premiers have been in talks about this idea and have recently proposed it to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
