Jane Elliott (born May 27, 1933) is an American former third-grade schoolteacher, anti-racism activist, and educator. She is known for her “Blue eyes–Brown eyes” exercise. She first conducted her famous exercise for her class on April 5, 1968, the day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. When her local newspaper published compositions that the children had written about the experience, the reactions (both positive and negative) formed the basis for her career as a public speaker against discrimination. Elliott’s classroom exercise was filmed the third time she held it with her 1970 third-graders to become The Eye of the Storm. This in turn inspired a retrospective that reunited the 1970 class members with their teacher fifteen years later in A Class Divided. After leaving her school, Elliott became a diversity educator full-time. She still holds the exercise and gives lectures about its effects all over the U.S. and in several locations overseas.

There’s only one race, the human race. Race theory was created by Humans.
Jane Elliott first gave this lesson on April 5, 1968, the day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It’s called the “Blue Eyes – Brown Eyes” exercise, and it teaches a lesson on discrimination. Our words come with consequences, both good and bad. Our words still have power to bring down the Black & Indigenous communities today.

https://www.clarkson.edu http://www.clarkson.edu/admissions/ Jane Elliott is an outspoken anti-racism activist, feminist and LGBT activist, but if you ask her, she simply says, “I prefer to be called an educator.” Jane Elliott is famous for creating the “blue-eye/brown-eye” exercise, which she developed the day after Martin Luther King’s assassination. That day back in 1968, she was going to teach her third-grade class about Native Americans and the Sioux prayer that goes “Oh Great Spirit, keep me from ever judging a man until I have walked a mile in his moccasins.” However, after she learned about King’s assassination she defied convention. She divided her class according to each child’s eye color. The children with blue eyes would be superior to the children with brown eyes. All class privileges would be taken away from the children with brown eyes and given to the children with blue eyes. She would encourage the blue-eyed children to play only with other children with blue eyes while the children with brown eyes were denied the privilege of using the playground. The following day she reversed the roles. The result of the exercise was a group of children with a new view of diversity and acceptance. Jane also experienced a life-changing moment that would lead her to a new life of teaching others about the meaning of acceptance and a new identification as the “foremother” diversity training.

NEW YORK (AP) — Missy Elliott, the creative mastermind who has written hit songs for a number of female acts and created camaraderie among women in the music industry for more than two decades, felt the love back from her musical sisters as she became the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. During a performance, breakthrough singer-rapper Lizzo brought Elliott’s colorful and eccentric music videos to life in an ensemble similar to what Elliott sported in the late ’90s — the finger wave hairdo included. Da Brat, fiery as ever, joined Lizzo onstage for “Sock It 2 Me” in New York on Thursday night. Queen Latifah, a Grammy, Emmy and Golden Globe winner, inducted Elliott with kind words as she paid homage to their long-lasting friendship. And even former first lady Michelle Obama took her turn to say how much of a Missy Elliott fan she is. “Missy, I want to thank you for all of your trailblazing ways,” Obama said in a taped video that aired during the event. “Thank you not for just sharing your gift with the world, but for being an advocate for so many people out there, especially young girls who are still figuring out how to make their voices heard.” It all brought Elliott to tears: Near the end of her 10-minute speech, the Grammy winner broke down after telling funny and deep stories about how her creative mind worked as a child. “I am thankful,” she said, pausing for a few seconds. “Every time I [More]
