We don’t like the two-party system. So why do we have it? Help keep Vox free for everybody: http://www.vox.com/give-now America’s two-party system is widely hated. Very few Americans think the two major parties do an adequate job representing us, and most say more parties are needed. But when it comes time to vote, very few of us actually vote for third-party candidates. Often, this is explained as either a failure of will (we’d have third parties if more people would just vote for them), or a conspiracy (the political and media establishments suppress third-party candidates and ideas). And it’s not that those things aren’t true. But there’s a much simpler explanation, and it’s the very basic rule governing almost every single one of our elections: Only one person can win. If you’re American, that probably sounds utterly reasonable: what the hell other kinds of elections even are there? But the answer is: lots. Winner-take-all elections (also called plurality voting, or “first past the post”) are actually a practice that most advanced democracies left behind long ago — and they’re what keep us from having more political options. Even if you’re not sold on the need for more parties in the US, though, scratch the surface of “only one person can win” a little and you start to see how it actually produces perverse results within the two-party system as well. It’s a big part of why the political parties have moved farther apart from each other, and it leaves about [More]

After two-thirds of the ballot papers had been counted, the ANC had surpassed four million votes. The DA has just over two million votes, followed by MK with just over a million votes. The EFF is also nearing the million mark with just over 900.000 votes. The ANC currently has 41%, the DA 22% and the fledgling MK 12% of the vote. The IEC announced earlier that it is pulling all the stops to ensure the finalisation of the capturing and auditing of the results for this year’s election, saying that this remains on course. The Eastern Cape is at just over 92% of the capturing, the Free State at just over 95%. The Northern Cape is at 100% with all the districts completed. Let’s take a look at the Northern Cape now and see how things are looking. The race is not only about the votes, but seats too. The makeup of provincial legislatures is also critical. The IEC yesterday spoke about the metros tend to lag. So let’s look at the CSIR projections when it comes to the possible makeup of the Gauteng legislature. Exit polls had begun to roll in at the end of European elections across the EU’s 27 countries, when President Emmanuel Macron delivered his bombshell moment in a televised address to a stunned French population. “I’ve decided to hand you back the choice of our parliamentary future with a vote. I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly,” he declared. The National Rally party – led by Mr Macron’s rivals Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella – was one of the big gains that Europe’s far-right parties had expected, and confirmation came with all the exit polls giving the party more than 30%, double that of Mr Macron’s centrist Renaissance. But beyond France, the broader story of Europe’s four-day vote marathon really belonged to the parties of the centre right. They tightened their grip on the European Parliament, with victories in Germany and Spain, and significant advances in Hungary, against long-dominant Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The far right did not enjoy as great a surge across Europe as many had predicted. In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party came second, while Austria’s party of the same name came out as winners, but only narrowly.
