In the second installment of Synapse’s Third Thursday webinar series, we explored nuclear power economics. Synapse staff members have been analyzing Indian Point nuclear power plant issues since the early 1980s. In 2017, New York officially announced the impending closure of Indian Point. Principal Associate Bob Fagan and Associate Spencer Fields, authors of our report (for Riverkeeper and Natural Resources Defense Council) on replacement energy and capacity resources associated with Indian Point’s retirement, discussed the use of ReEDS modeling in their most recent analysis. They discussed challenges such as accounting for energy efficiency, New York state policies, and other endogenous inputs. Moderator Bruce Biewald (CEO/Founder) provided historical context based on Synapse’s long history with Indian Point. What are the costs to construct, fuel and operate a nuclear power plant compared to a natural gas power plant. Compares capital cost and fuel costs and looks at how the cost over time should be analyzed. This is done in a visual manner.
