There may be light at the end of the tunnel today for London as new modelling suggests the capital’s coronavirus outbreak is slowing dramatically. The research by Public Health England and Cambridge University suggests the reproduction rate of the virus, the ‘r’ is now at 0.4 in the capital. Meaning for every ten people who catch coronavirus, it will be passed on to just four others. The research estimates that new daily infections in the capital are now at just 24 Before the lockdown, London’s r rate was around 2.8, with 213,000 people being infected a day by March 23rd, when the lockdown was imposed. The modelling suggests that London’s infection rate is halving every 3.5 days in an encouraging boost for Britain’s biggest city and economic powerhouse. After London, the South West has the second lowest rate of infection with 739 daily recorded cases. In different parts of the country, however, the picture painted is much bleaker. Brits in England are now officially being encouraged, if they cannot work from home, to return to their jobs. The government hopes to kickstart the economy after seven weeks of lockdown while keeping the coronavirus at bay through social distancing in workplaces and public transport. Today workers were given the green light to head out of lockdown if they couldn’t do their job from home – with thousands cramming onto public transport during rush hour. While Brits were urged not to use buses and trains unless they absolutely have to, worrying pictures show people packed onto busy Tubes. Earlier this week TfL said even when 100 per cent of services are back and running, only 15 per cent of the usual passenger capacity would be able to travel and keep two metres between them. But despite the Government giving the go-ahead, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps warned it was a “life or death” gamble. He told the BBC this morning: “This is a life and death situation and I do encourage people to look at the guidance for travelling on public transport. So, as Brits clock back in across England, is it safe for them to do so? Here to answer that and more Sun-reader questions is TV’s most-trusted medic Dr Hilary Jones. In today’s episode of Ask Dr Hilary: Coronavirus Explained… I was in close contact with a family member who died a week ago from the virus. He died while I was there… I have self-isolated for a week [More]
The easing of circuit-breaker measures by Singapore on May 12 should not be taken as an opportunity to go out more, National Development Minister Lawrence Wong cautioned. “I know some people may not have had a haircut for some time, but there is no need to rush to go out to have a haircut on May 12. There will be time to do so,” he said at a press conference on Friday (May 8). https://cna.asia/2YJiJWx #COVID19 #coronavirus #Singapore Subscribe to our channel here: https://cna.asia/youtubesub Subscribe to our news service on Telegram: https://cna.asia/telegram Follow us: CNA: https://cna.asia CNA Lifestyle: http://www.cnalifestyle.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/channelnewsasia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/channelnewsasia Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/channelnewsasia

While we have to wait until Sunday to find out how our lockdown will be eased, the process is starting today in Italy – the first European country to bring in restrictions. Its sleeping economic life – and social life – for that matter have started to stir. And it is happening in other places too today. In Spain, small shops are able to reopen, including hairdressers – wouldn’t that be lovely – bookshops, florists and takeaways. In Portugal too small shops can open again and people are allowed to travel on public transport so long as they wear masks. In Croatia, today marked Phase Two in lifting their lockdown. They opened some beaches, as they did in Greece today, and also allowed hairdressers and beauticians to reopen. And, in Italy, four and a half million people were allowed back to work, in factories, building sites and in cafes ANI and restaurants doing takeaways. And families could meet again – if they don’t live too far apart. • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/itvnews Follow ITV News on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itvnews/
