The quake: A 6.4 earthquake hit Southern California, about 150 miles north Los Angeles, according to the US Geological Survey. It was the strongest to hit Southern California in nearly 20 years. The aftershocks: At least 159 aftershocks have been recorded today. Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist, said there is a 50% chance of another large quake in the next week.A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Southern California this morning. We’re wrapping up our live coverage, but here’s what we know so far about the quake: Where it hit: The earthquake was centered near Ridgecrest, California, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. It was felt in both Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It was the worst in decades: The quake was the largest quake to hit the area since 1999, when a 7.1 earthquake struck in a remote part of the Mojave desert. There were a lot of aftershocks: At least 159 aftershocks have been recorded today. About the damage: The earthquake left scattered damage throughout the region. Footage from Ridgecrest showed firefighters hosing down flames rising from homes, and there were also power outages in the city of 28,000 residents. There’s still a risk: Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist, said there is a 50% chance of another large quake in the next week. She added that there is a 1 in 20 chance that a bigger earthquake will hit within the next few days

On Friday, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded near the epicenter of the original quake in Ridgecrest. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Friday night about 11 miles from Ridgecrest, the town in Kern County which was very close to the epicenter of the magnitude 6.4 quake felt on Thursday. Emergency officials and local residents in Ridgecrest are now left cleaning up the damage from both temblors (bottom right left and right) The quake, which sparked fires, cracked buildings and interrupted sports games, was felt hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas and downtown Los Angeles as a rolling motion that seemed to last at least a half-minute. Two news anchors for the local CBS affiliate in Los Angeles – Juan Fernandez and Sara Donchey – were filmed live on the air as the earthquake hit, sending them into a panic (top main). Friday’s quake was the most powerful to hit Southern California since another 7.1 temblor in the same area in 1999. There have already been more than 1,700 aftershocks (mapped in the top inset) recorded in the wake of Thursday’s quake, and aftershocks from the new main quake could occur for years, seismologists have warned.
