New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday during a COVID-19 briefing that three children in New York State have died from a rare inflammatory syndrome believed to be linked to COVID-19. The illness shares symptoms with toxic shock and Kawasaki disease. Cuomo said state health officials were reviewing 73 cases where children exposed to COVID-19 also exhibited symptoms of the syndrome, which included inflammation of the blood vessels. He said this inflammation could then in turn could cause heart problems. The governor said New York’s health department had partnered with the New York Genome Center and Rockefeller University to look at whether there is a genetic basis for the syndrome. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had also asked the state to develop a national criteria for identifying and responding to the syndrome. As of Saturday, the state had 333,122 cases of the novel coronavirus, according to numbers compiled by Johns Hopkins University, with 26,243 deaths reported. A 57-year-old California woman who was seemingly healthy when she died of a sudden heart attack in early February is now believed to be the first American to have died of the coronavirus. Patricia Dowd’s daughter found her dead on Feb. 6 at their home. Dowd’s death came as a shock to her family, who said she “exercised routinely, watched her diet and took no medication.” Now, she is among three new COVID-19 cases confirmed by Santa Clara County officials posthumously through tissue samples.

It was then joined by the Rotterdam for supplies, and both ships found themselves in limbo with no port accepting their call. Daredevil “Mad Mike” Hughes died during an attempt to launch his homemade rocket Saturday. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes’ family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey,” the Science Channel said in a statement. Hughes was scheduled to launch his homemade rocket for a new Science Channel series called “Homemade Astronauts,” according to the Discovery Channel website. Hughes and Waldo Stakes built a steam-powered rocket with the intent of launching Hughes 5,000 feet into the air, the website said. He eventually hoped to develop a rocket that would launch him 62 miles in the air to where the Earth’s atmosphere meets outer space, according to the Discovery Channel. Deputies responded to the fatal rocket crash off highway 247 in Barstow, California, on Saturday afternoon, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. While authorities did not formally identify Hughes, they said a man was pronounced dead after a rocket crashed in the open desert during a launch event. A sheriff’s aviation unit is investigating.
