There is a glimmer of hope as the total number of UK deaths decline from peak, new figures from the ONS suggest. More than one million Australians have downloaded the government’s COVID tracking app as the national curve of coronavirus cases continues on a steady decline, with the death toll remaining at 83. Nearly three million cases of the virus have been recorded worldwide with more than 206,000 fatalities. The United State’s hardest hit state, New York, has recorded its lowest number of daily deaths in a month with 367 deaths. Peru is facing an escalating crisis as it recorded more than 2,000 new infections overnight, despite implementing strict restrictions at the beginning of the outbreak. Image: Getty

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gave a briefing to media on the state’s ongoing COVID-19 crisis on Friday. Cuomo said that the state’s total COVID-19 hospitalizations are declining. However, how fast the curve for hospitalizations and cases will continue to decline depends on how citizens adhere to social distancing measures and how much testing for the virus could be conducted, Cuomo said. The governor added that by the time the U.S. instated a travel ban from China, the “horse had already left the barn,” meaning the novel coronavirus had already spread worldwide, and the virus in the state likely came from the strain in Europe after around 13,000 flights from Europe landed in New York and New Jersey. Cuomo said Republican Senator Mitch McConnell’s idea for states to declare bankruptcy rather than receive economic bailouts is not only unethical, but it sends a signal to international markets that the U.S. is in “real trouble.” The governor said if McConnell pushes for a bill allowing for states to do so, and it comes law, New York would not be partaking.
