Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw gave an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province Monday and the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic. The province’s top doctor said that 34 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Alberta in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases in the province to 400. She said 6,501 people have now recovered from the virus. As of Monday, there were 53 people in hospital with COVID-19, six of whom were in intensive care units. Hinshaw said no new deaths have been reported. On Sunday, Alberta announced 18 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths. Alberta has a total of 7,010 cases of COVID-19 and 143 deaths as of Monday. British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Saturday. Dr. Henry reported 11 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths Saturday. The province now has a total of 2,573 COVID-19 cases and 2,181 have fully recovered. Of the remaining 228 active cases in B.C., 35 people were in hospital and five in intensive care. She also said the outbreak at Haro Park Centre has officially been cleared, as had another outbreak at the Evergreen House. British Columbia health officials reported nine new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and two additional deaths attributed to the virus. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said B.C. has now recorded 2,558 cases in total, 84 per cent of whom have recovered. Of the 241 active cases in the province, 33 are in hospital and six of those are in intensive care. The province’s death toll is now 164. Meanwhile, a new outbreak has been declared at a long-term care facility in the Fraser Health region, bringing the total number of residential or acute care facilities dealing with the virus to 16. Officials said, however, that an outbreak at the Mission Institution, a federal prison in the Fraser Valley, has ended. Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams, along with the associate chief medical officer Dr. Barbara Yaffe, provided a briefing on Wednesday discussing the latest COVID-19 numbers and the ongoing efforts to combat the pandemic. Ontario is reporting 292 new cases of COVID-19, with the total confirmed cases now at 26,483. The province is also reporting 32 new deaths, bringing the total number who have died from COVID-19 to 2,155. British Columbia’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Bonnie Henry and the province’s Minister of Health Adrian Dix provided a briefing on Monday to talk about the province’s ongoing efforts to fight COVID-19. Dr. Henry reported that there are 12 new COVID-19 cases since Saturday and four new deaths, bringing B.C.’s COVID-19 death toll to 161. Dr. Henry reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday to bring B.C.’s total number of cases to 2,517. She said there have been two new deaths in the province, both in long-term care homes in the Fraser Health region, bringing the total number to those who have died to 157. She said the province has entered phase two of its reopening this week and noted that she has amended the province’s social gatherings restrictions to include gatherings in vehicles. Ontario reported 441 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 24,628 cases. The province also reported 28 new deaths, bringing the death toll to 2,021. Ontario will be moving forward with increased testing this weekend, including those who are asymptomatic. Those to be tested will include frontline health workers and other workplaces of concern. Dr. Williams said the utilization of testing capacity was one of the main reasons why the province will move ahead with the tests.
