Russia is now among the ten nations most affected by coronavirus, with Moscow announcing on Monday that recorded cases had reached 87,147. Russia, like most countries dealing with the pandemic, faces a list of hurdles in flattening the curve. Medical staff in Moscow say they don’t have enough personal protective gear and point to a high rate of infection among health workers. The government has also moved to combat misinformation around the virus, taking measures including launching a smartphone app that tracks people who are under quarantine. Government opponents call the measures draconian and have said they risk turning Russia into a “digital concentration camp”. In this episode of The Stream, we discuss Russia’s handling of the pandemic, and ask is there anything more that can be done. More than one million Australians have downloaded the government’s COVID tracking app as the national curve of coronavirus cases continues on a steady decline, with the death toll remaining at 83. Nearly three million cases of the virus have been recorded worldwide with more than 206,000 fatalities. The United State’s hardest hit state, New York, has recorded its lowest number of daily deaths in a month with 367 deaths. Peru is facing an escalating crisis as it recorded more than 2,000 new infections overnight, despite implementing strict restrictions at the beginning of the outbreak. Image: Getty

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo provided an update on the COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday morning as the state continues to see more cases reported. Cuomo said that the outbreak curve in the state is “continuing to flatten” according to the latest infection rate data, and that it appears to have begun to “plateau”. He stated that hospitalization numbers are down despite the still-high number of infections. Cuomo also discussed when businesses should reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday, saying that it was both a “public health question and an economic question,” and that people cannot be asked to choose between “lives lost and dollars gained.” He said that he wants to ensure the decision is based on research, including researching the possibility of a second wave of the outbreak. He added that the death toll caused by the COVID-19 pandemic shows “incredible numbers depicting incredible loss and pain,” saying that 783 lives were lost on Saturday alone, bringing the total to 8,500. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered some good news Thursday from Albany as recent data suggests the COVID-19 curve is beginning to flatten in New York State. He said the state had its lowest net hospitalization increase of 200 on Wednesday, and the lowest change in ICU admissions. Cuomo said the reason behind that is that New Yorkers are complying with the social distancing measures. However, Cuomo also discussed different COVID-19 modeling projections which show a range between 55,000 up to 110,000 individuals needing hospitalization. He said all projections “are devastating for New York.” Cuomo said that New York currently a capacity of 53,000 when it comes to beds state-wide. New York State reported 18,279 hospitalizations due to COVID-19 on Thursday, and 799 deaths. The total number of cases in the state is at 151,079 as of Thursday.
