Federal ministers and health officials are expected to hold a COVID-19 briefing to update Canadians on the latest coronavirus cases in the country and discuss the ongoing government response to the pandemic on Wednesday. The federal government continues to add to the supply of personal protective equipment and related medical equipment needed to fight COVID-19. Trudeau pointed out that over half the face shields acquired so far have been made by a Canadian company that expanded its workforce to contribute to the effort. He said Tuesday that Canada has what’s required to meet the provinces’ demands at the moment but as the slow reopening of the country begins, more will be needed. New Zealand is accelerating a cabinet decision to tear down all COVID-19 restrictions except border controls to Monday thanks to exceptional control of the virus. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern painted a picture of what life would look like under easing at alert level 1 – which would see all current rules on business and services lifted and social distancing abolished. Ms Ardern stressed it is important Kiwis adopt new behaviours despite the change such as hygiene. “Ultimately, level 1 represents us getting the virus under control, but the war doesn’t end so long as COVID is still around the world, and the economic damage caused by it is ongoing,” she said. “We need to stick to level 2 rules for now.” New Zealand has recorded no new cases of COVID-19 for 12 consecutive days, with just one active case in the entire country. There is a big concern among health officials that the recent protests against police violence could prompt a spike in the number of cases in several weeks. Social distancing becomes difficult in tightly packed crowds, but there are other things you can do to reduce your risk and still show up to protest injustice. Jack Caravanos is a public health expert at New York University. He said make sure to protect your respiratory tract. “The key is of course to keep your mask on,” Caranavos said.
