Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said it was now an emergency situation. The southern cities of Daegu and Cheongdo have been declared “special care zones”. The streets of Daegu are now largely abandoned. South Korea has also locked down its military after several soldiers tested positive for the coronavirus. The authorities have also told about 9,000 members of a religious group to self quarantine, after the sect was identified as a coronavirus hotbed. On Friday, the country reported 52 new confirmed cases after 53 on Thursday. South Korea now has a total of 156 cases making it the largest cluster outside mainland China and the cruise ship docked off Japan. Coronavirus Live Updates: The novel coronavirus has continued to spread around the world, with concerns of growing infection clusters in South Korea, Singapore and Japan, even as the worst of the outbreak remains focused in mainland China. Death toll rises: As of Sunday, the number of confirmed cases of the virus is nearing 80,000. The number of deaths stands at 2,462. Of those, 20 occurred outside mainland China. Feb.26 — South Korea confirmed 115 more coronavirus cases, bringing total infections to 1,261. A week ago, the country had only 51 cases. South Korea’s reported cases of the coronavirus COVID-19 nearly doubled, to more than 200. Most of the new cases are members of a religious sect, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, and are centered in the city of Daegu. The outbreak makes South Korea the worst-affected country outside China. China has reported an uptick in coronavirus cases, with more than 400 new infections in Chinese prisons alone. Globally, the viral outbreak has infected some 76,000 people and killed more than 2,200. Ontario health officials have announced a new presumptive case of novel coronavirus in Toronto two days after all cases were cleared in the province. The latest presumptive case of COVID-19 is a woman from China who landed in Canada on Feb. 21, according to a statement by Ontario’s Ministry of Health. The window of opportunity to contain a mass global outbreak of the killer coronavirus is “narrowing”, the head of the World Health Organisation has warned.  Worried Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has expressed fears of a pattern of infection as countries across the world see hundreds of cases of the virus – with no clear link to source country China.  His comments come as officials in Iran and Italy close schools and offices and cancel events amid a spread of the deadly bug.  Iran today reported two more deaths, bringing the total to four, and said the fatalities were from among 13 new confirmed cases of the virus.  Concerns over the spread of the virus prompted Iran to close all schools and Shiite seminaries in Qom, about 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of Tehran.
