British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 29 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the province’s total to 1,203 cases. This is the lowest increase B.C. has seen in weeks, but Henry said she’s not claiming victory yet. “I don’t think I’m ready to say anything is a ‘win’ yet, but every day that we have been bending that curve is a good thing,” Henry said. Three more people have died from the novel coronavirus in B.C., raising the death toll to 35. Henry said outbreaks have been identified at 23 long-term care facilities across the province. The majority of the province’s deaths from COVID-19 have been linked to at least two seniors’ homes. U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. coronavirus task force provided their daily update on the COVID-19 crisis in America on Saturday. Trump said that “there will be a lot of death” throughout the country, and that the next two weeks will be crucial to combat the outbreak. He added that there were 10,000 ventilators stockpiled, and that 1,000 military personnel will be deployed to New York City to assist with the growing number of cases. Trump also said that although the country will use “every single resource” to protect citizens amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he wants to “finish this war” and “open our country again.” He said that the U.S. “wasn’t meant for this” and that he does not want to be dealing with the outbreak for many more months. Speaking about the controversy surrounding Minnesota-based medical supply firm 3M, Trump stated that the administration was “very disappointed” in the company and that “they should be taking care of” the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic. On Friday, 3M said Trump asked the company to stop selling N95 respirators to other countries and prioritize shipping medical supplies to the U.S. As of April 4, the U.S. had over 300,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 8,000 deaths. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday, during a daily briefing on the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, that his government is “not looking” at retaliatory or punitive measures following an order from U.S. President Donald Trump for the medical supply firm 3M to stop exporting N95 masks to Canada. Trudeau also spoke about the federal government’s delay in releasing coronavirus projection models, saying it relies on data from the provinces before it can create an accurate projection on the impact of the novel coronavirus across the country. Trudeau also announced $40 million in funding for women’s shelters and sexual assault centres across the country, including an additional $10 million for shelters helping indigenous women and children fleeing domestic violence. As of Saturday morning, Canada had 12,920 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to numbers compiled by researchers at John Hopkins University. There have been 215 deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus. Ontario Premier Doug Ford renewed his call for medical supplies on Saturday, saying that while officials at Health Canada are doing “everything they can” it may be time to “rattle some cages.” Ford responded to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s earlier comments that Canada is set to receive “millions” of medical masks from China, suggesting that Ontario should receive 40 per cent of the shipment because the province makes up 40 per cent of Canada’s population. The premier also took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump for his order asking medical supply company 3M to halt exports of N95 masks to Canada, calling it “unacceptable.” Ontario confirmed 375 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the provincial total to 3,630. The province also reported 27 new deaths, with the death toll rising to 94. Berlin’s city government has accused the US of ‘an act of modern day piracy’ after a shipment of 200,000 protective face masks was hijacked on its way from China to Germany. The masks had been ordered by Berlin’s police force from an American manufacturer producing in China. But, according to Berlin authorities, they were confiscated in Bangkok and diverted to the US. As the coronavirus pandemic worsens, demand for crucial medical supplies, such as masks and respirators, has surged worldwide, leading to unprecedented buying practices and countries outbidding each other. New York state had its largest single-day death toll in the pandemic so far. The state now accounts for nearly half of all virus-related fatalities in the country. As hospitals continue to face critical shortages of medical equipment, New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, has issued an executive order to seize critically-needed supplies across the state and bring them to where they’re needed most. China is sending medical expertise and supplies around the world, positioning itself as a potential savior in the fight against the new coronavirus just as the West sinks deeper into crisis. It’s a stunning turnaround just weeks after the COVID-19 outbreak emerged in China and began its exponential growth. Is there more to this than meets the eye? Senior figures in Beijing are accused of leading disinformation campaigns aimed at deflecting blame for the outbreak getting out of control in the first place. And experts explain how China’s deliveries of medical supplies fit in to a much longer-term project aimed at building its image and influence around the world — particularly in regions such as Central and Eastern Europe, where Beijing’s attentions have raised fears it is trying to divide the European Union. With the Western alliance already weakened by the Trump presidency and uncertainty over the unity of Europe, could China turn the disaster of COVID-19 into a major step towards global leadership? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is not looking at retaliatory measures after U.S. President Donald Trump told a manufacturer of medical masks not to export them to Canada. Trudeau said he would be speaking with Trump in the coming days and looking for a positive solution on the issue. Chief political correspondent David Akin and Ottawa bureau chief Mercedes Stephenson break down Trudeau’s comments and what the next steps may be with the United States. They also look into the lack of modelling projections being provided by the prime minister Trudeau and the federal government. Governor Andrew Cuomo said the state has still not reached what he calls the ‘apex’ of the COVID-19 pandemic, and estimates it will hit that mark in the next four to eight days. Cuomo announced Saturday that New York State suffered its deadliest 24 hours, reporting an additional 630 COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the state total to 3,565. There were 10,841 new cases also recorded in the state bringing the total to 113,704. Cuomo says there are now up to 15,905 patients in hospitals with COVID-19 with 4,125 of those in ICU. He added that of those who have been hospitalized, 66 per cent have recovered. There are 85,000 volunteers who are assisting with the novel coronavirus response in New York State, and Cuomo says of those, 22,000 have come from out of state.
