Matt Hancock chairs today’s Downing Street press conference after being warned by the country’s statistics watchdog that the Government’s testing figures for coronavirus are “still far from complete and comprehensible”. David Norgrove, chairman of the UK Statistics Authority, said the way the Government presented the figures appeared to be aimed at showing “the largest possible number of tests, even at the expense of understanding”. Elsewhere, Housing Minister Simon Clarke has said that it is going to be “very, very difficult” for people to take summer holidays this year, despite confirming that air bridges are still part of a “live” debate. He told BBC Breakfast that the two-week quarantine, which comes in from June 8, was “absolutely vital” and would last “for as long as is needed”. That has gone down badly with the bosses of Britain’s biggest travel and hospitality businesses, who have warned they will have to lay off up to 60 per cent of their staff if the quarantine goes ahead. The federal government continues to add to the supply of personal protective equipment and related medical equipment needed to fight COVID-19. The prime minister says the race to accumulate what Canada needs requires a balance between shopping all over the world and continuing to bolster manufacturing capabilities at home. Justin Trudeau pointed out that over half the face shields acquired so far have been made by a Canadian company that expanded its workforce to contribute to the effort. He says Canada has what’s required to meet the provinces’ demands at the moment but as the slow reopening of the country begins, more will be needed. The federal government is in the market for hundreds of millions of pieces of gear, from gloves to gowns to ventilators. The numbers on hand of most goods are ticking steadily up, though not for ventilators – as of May 26, only 203 had arrived out of the nearly 40,000 ordered. Manitoba’s chief medical health officer Dr. Brent Roussin and Shared Health’s chief nursing officer Lanette Siragusa shared an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province and the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Monday. During the briefing, it was announced that there are no new cases of the novel coronavirus to report. Roussin said the province’s count of lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases remains at 295. The doctor gave more information on two cases reported late last week, which health officials have previously said were related to travel. Roussin now says both cases were truck drivers who had traveled into the United States. He said both truck drivers had self-isolated quickly after noticing symptoms. The province enters Phase 2 of its reopening plan on Monday, which will include expanded capacity at childcare centres, allowing limited access to educational facilities, as well as the reopening of community centres and resumption of team sports and recreational activities like theatre and dance. Government officials hold a daily briefing to update on the coronavirus outbreak in the United Kingdom.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford held a briefing Monday alongside Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliot. Ontario reported 326 new cases of novel coronavirus Sunday morning, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 27,859. Nineteen new deaths were also announced, bringing the total fatalities attributed to the virus in the province to 2,266. Ford said on Friday that they are looking at the idea of a regional approach to reopenings, in conjunction with the expanded testing plan announced earlier that day. He said that more testing gives a better scope what’s happening around the province and can help guide what locations could be reopened sooner.
