The number of cases in the region has been growing steadily since it became the epicentre of the global pandemic last month, with Brazil the worst-affected country. But some of Brazil’s famous beaches have reopened, and other Latin American governments have already started lifting restrictions to help stem the economic fallout. This video was supposed to answer some of the lingering questions about COVID that you’ve had but I think leading with a much more important issue of the moment (of the generation) is mandatory. George Floyd should be with us right now. Countless others should be with us right now. It’s a brutal reality that we must accept that we still have racism among us. It’s disturbing that it took the loss of another life to wake us up as a community to these injustices. Let us all step up and be better all around. Let’s call out when it happens, let’s prevent it before it happens. Black lives matter. The Government will “certainly be developing” the concept of air bridges or “travel corridors” in the hope of moving away from a blanket quarantine, Boris Johnson has said. The Prime Minister was quizzed about the new 14-day measures, which are due to start on June 8 and run until June 28 at the earliest. At the daily Downing Street press conference he said: “On the air corridors, I don’t want to go into the negotiations we are having but, clearly, we are discussing with our partners around the whole of Europe about what could be done.” He later referred to them as “travel corridors” to countries with similar or lower infection rates, adding: “We will certainly be developing that as we go forward.” Earlier today Priti Patel fended off criticism from several senior Conservative MPs as she set out the Government’s plans for a blanket approach to quarantine. She said: “It is really important for the British public and members to put this into perspective. “We are in a national health emergency right now. This isn’t about the inconvenience of certain regulations and measures – we are here to make sure we protect public health first and foremost.” But Tory backbenchers including former ministers Liam Fox and Theresa Villiers, and Sir Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 committee, questioned both the timing and the approach of the new measures. Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Wednesday that his government is investing a $150 million in funding to improve broadband and cellular connectivity in Ontario. Ford said this money will go directly to expanding broadband and cellular access to more families and businesses in rural Ontario. Ford added that his government is partnering with municipalities, Indigenous communities and private sectors to deliver those critical projects. However, the premier called on the federal government for support and to “deliver on its commitment” to broadband accessibility, because “we can’t do it alone.” The new Improving Connectivity in Ontario, or ICON, program, when leveraged, has the potential to result in an investment of up to $500 million in total partner funding to improve connectivity in underserved and unserved areas. Ontario reported 338 new COVID-19 cases and 9 deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases to 29,047.
