Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe delivered a daily update Tuesday on the province’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Williams spoke about the shortage in medical supplies during the briefing, explaining that many countries were caught unprepared given the demand for masks and other supplies around the world. Williams compared the situation to the H1N1 pandemic and the SARS outbreak in Ontario and said in those cases, Ontario was able to more easily access supplies from other countries. Williams also said an investigation would need to be carried out into a shipment of $200,000 worth of masks delivered to Toronto care homes that had to be recalled. A statement released on Tuesday said the masks “did not meet the city’s standard and specifications.” Ontario reported 379 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 4,726. The death toll increased to 153 after 21 new COVID-19-related deaths were reported.
