Stephen Thompson | August 27, 2024 Lainey Wilson took a long, winding path to country-music stardom, beginning with a high school stint as a Hannah Montana impersonator. That path led the Louisiana native to a Grammy for best country album earlier this year — for her terrific 2022 breakthrough, Bell Bottom Country — and it continues with Whirlwind, which dropped Friday. Just days before the new album’s release, Wilson took yet another victory lap at the Tiny Desk, where she performed three songs from Whirlwind before closing with the first single from Bell Bottom Country, “Heart Like a Truck.” Though she and her band opened the set with two killer songs about romantic devotion, the show’s grabbiest moments — and the ones likeliest to go viral — came during the irreverent “Ring Finger,” a kiss-off song for the ages. (How we made it to 2024 without a banger containing the words “I got the ring / He got the finger” will have to remain a mystery.) The whole deeply charming set announced Wilson as a star with staying power. She’ll maintain a presence at the Tiny Desk, too: She left us her hat for safekeeping. But when you watch his set from behind Bob Boilen’s desk, you’d never suspect any discomfort. Backed by his touring band, Styles performed several songs from his latest solo album, Fine Line. Between tracks, he talked about the process of writing these songs: From the day off in Nashville that led to “Watermelon Sugar,” to the feeling of lovesickness he tried to capture in “Adore You.” The camaraderie between the band was clear; and Styles was in on the joy, twirling in his seat between verses. Styles might not necessarily [More]

Dec. 4, 2020 | Abby O’Neill — With a genuine smile stretched across her face, Dua Lipa seems overjoyed to reconnect with her band for their only performance since their tour in support of her sophomore album, Future Nostalgia, was cancelled in March. Glowing from the inside out and accentuated by the apricot hues of a backdrop in a London studio, Dua and her backup vocalists and band bring life and warmth into households in need of “levitating” and some pep in their step this winter. This vibrant four song set of dance hits, all from Future Nostalgia, will surely have you cutting up the floor in your kitchen while quarantining in the cold weather. While we can’t film our Tiny Desk concerts at NPR’s D.C. office during the pandemic, our “home” series has created opportunity for global megastars like Dua Lipa to bring her uptempo dance joints all the way from London. Of Kosovar Albanian descent, Dua Lipa was raised in the UK and rose to super stardom in the three years since her eponymous debut album dropped in 2017. Anamaria Sayre | March 10, 2022 When catching glimpses of his meteoric rise to global stardom and his picturesque life with partner and artist Evaluna Montaner, fans are often left to speculate on the romance of Camilo’s life. From his Tiny Desk (home) Concert in Miami, the Colombian singer-songwriter pulls back the curtain for 15 minutes of soul-baring intimacy, letting the world view his fairytale life in full bloom. Trading out his typical guitar opening for soulful strings, Camilo opens with a softer rendition of “Índigo,” a sweet dedication to his soon-to-be born baby of the same name. Setting the tone for his love-laden performance, he sings to an off-camera Montaner, Índigo’s mamá and Camilo’s querida, who trades her usual place as singer on the duet to serve as director for the performance. Transitioning to a slower “La Mitad,” his sweet vocals overlap with layers of singing guitar for a meditative rendition of the heartfelt track. When he completes the piece, Camilo pauses to recite a poem he’s written for the occasion, inviting the audience to explore the inner workings of the mind behind the music. He transitions into a full-bodied, emotional performance of “El Mismo Aire,” complete with more silky strings and captivating percussion. Cowbell and [More]

Señorita Bass Cover – Camilla Cabello Tiny Desk (Home) Concert October 15, 2021 To the beat of her swishing hips and swaying percussionists, Camila Cabello’s famous “Half of my heart is in Havana” reverberates across this musician-packed Miami set, with an at-home ease that feels novel for the global popstar. Born to a Cuban mother and Mexican father in Havana, Cuba, Cabello is no stranger to blending borders and connecting worlds. As the final performance in our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, her El Tiny concert epitomises the cross-cultural, transnational musical identities we’ve centered over the course of the series. Each unique arrangement of her universal hits represents and explores a new facet of the identities and experiences that make up Cabello. These stripped-down renditions of her hits “Havana,” “Real Friends,” “Señorita” and “Don’t Go Yet” include more Latin instrumentation than the recordings — presumably bringing them closer to sounds that were first introduced to her as music during her childhood in Havana, Mexico City, and Miami. The interlude featuring a sacred Afro-Cuban Santería chant and the following performance of the unreleased, Mariachi-based “La Buena Vida,” firmly root Cabello’s El Tiny performance within two cultural traditions that don’t typically glitter under the harsh lights of a global stage. Here, we find Camila on the precipice of a voice that magically layers pop with tradition, holding all parts of a complex identity in seamless harmony. Flanked by Cuban congueros and Mexican mariachi, all aglow under the Miami sun, Camila Cabello’s heart has [More]

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Felix Contreras | January 12, 2022 It’s fair to say Mon Laferte is a musical chameleon. The Chilean vocalist’s output of late has covered a vast swath of musical styles from Latin America, from big-band mambo to electronic dance club jams with a hint of reggaeton, and a few stops in between. The secret to the successes of these stylistic changes is the level of imagination and creativity she infuses in each turn. So, it didn’t surprise me that her contribution to our Tiny Desk (home) concert series is a visual treat as much as it is a musical one. The opening strains of “Tu Falta de Querer” introduce a cabaret-styled small orchestra and a character who appears to be left at the altar of a small intimate colonial church. She’s in torch-singer mode throughout the four-song performance; take these lyrics from the first cut: “Ahora domiré / Muy profundamente para olvidar / Quisiera hasta la muerte, para no pensar / Me forro pa’ quitarme esta amarguara” (“Now I’ll sleep very deeply to forget I would like, until death, not to think. I erase you to take away this bitterness”) The 10-piece small orchestra is a combination of Mexican folkloric music and European chamber music, mixing the [More]

It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Lyndsey McKenna | April 14, 2021 A few years ago, some of us on the NPR Music team stumbled upon a copy of Demi Lovato’s 2013 book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year. Reading Lovato’s heartfelt daily reflections became a workday habit; her transparency and vulnerability made us ardent admirers who wanted nothing but the very best for Demi. We made it our mission to get Demi to the Tiny Desk, and though the pandemic had other plans, Lovato’s Tiny Desk (home) concert was worth the wait. Recorded on a sunny spring day in her Los Angeles backyard, Lovato begins with a moving rendition of “Tell Me You Love Me” from her 2017 record of the same name, accompanied by subtle, sparse keys. She continues her set with the title tracks from her recently-released studio album, Dancing With The Devil…The Art Of Starting Over. On both tracks, Lovato’s voice feels stabilizing and grounding; there’s a sense of clarity and purpose in its power. When interviewed by NPR’s Ailsa Chang back in 2017, Demi Lovato said, “I think I’ve lived a lot of life.” Through both her struggles and successes, Lovato’s shown all sides of herself – the confident and unapologetic star, but also the complexities of recovery [More]
